just pondering sum dumb question. say a hostel room is 20 bucks for the night and there are two people who share it does that mean that they pay ten each?

Usually hostel prices are quoted per bed, and they vary depending on the number of beds per room. Generally, a bed in a larger dorm will be cheaper than a private single or double. Some hotels that are listed on the tpunk site list their prices by the room, but in many small hotels and guest houses in Europe, the cost is per person, whether or not they share a room. (Usually the rate is slightly cheaper if two people share.)

If you're travelling with another person, budget hotel chains like Etap and Formule 1 can work out close to the price of two hostel beds, and the Etaps (which are slightly more expensive) have private bathrooms. Formule 1s have shared toilets. Just another option.

so this is probably a weird question. i plan on going back packing in Scotland, Ireland, and England next summer. i'm from the states. my first question. are there public park or nature reserves there? where i live is right next to the appilachian mts. and you can camp out there. its totally free totally legal. on nice nights we've just slept out side with a sleeping bag not tent needed. is this allowed anywhere? and secondly (this is the weird one) if there are said nature areas are there prohibitons on swimming/bathing in streams or rivers? we do this as well. i live in an area where some people don't have indoor plumbing and this is how they bath in summer. and us when we are camping and such.

well, ive been reading these boards for a while now and your name always comes up whenever friendly advice is requested so i figured i would ask you a question. my girlfriend and i are going to travel europe together for three months and we were looking at some of the rates for hostels. i noticed that rates always begin with dorm/single/double/ and sometimes triple. this might sound stupid but i have never stayed in a hostel before so i dont understand exactly what it means by double/triple?!?!? if a dorm is $20 and a double is $30. does that mean that my girlfriend and i would have to put $15 each to get a double room?!?!?! i appologize for my stupidity and i would greatly appreciate a response, from anyone.

Not a stupid question at all ! There is so much to learn when planning a trip abroad !

The rates is usually per person, so the lesser beds in a room, the higher the price (you have to pay for the extra "luxury" !). The cheapest is always the dormitory, so if you don't mind the lack of intimacy, and hearing other people snoaring (which you do anyway if you sleep in the two bed room next door!) this is the option to choose.

I guess if you have read Tumblezweedz good advice on the boards, that you are heading for Eastern Europe, aren't you ? If so, I'll add that if you travel during the low season, you'll be able to bargain the rate of the room if you go to hotels (not hostels), and some hostels sometimes offer lower rates. That info you can find in guide books such as Lonely Planet.
