Default Can i afford a mexican mini adventure??

Hi guys,

My boyfriend and I want to head to Mexico for 3 weeks this september on a bit of an adventure (ie keeping well clear of all our fellow brits splayed out on the beaches of cancun)
We would ideally like to head into Guatalamala and Belize if we had time too!!

We have quite a small budget and unfortunatly the flights are going to be around £500, so how much would we need to budget per day for a cheapass room, food and transport etc??

Futhermore does anyone know if and when cheap flights to mexico from the UK are availiable.

I have also seen £350 flights to LA- where would be the cheapest website to find a cheap flight from LA to either mexico city, cancun or Oaxaca?

Any other advise regarding places to visit, injections needed and other costs would be welcomed- im still in the v early planning of our trip but am already starting to get v v excited as per usual!!

Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Definitely hit up the Aztec/Mayan ruin trail...it's more off the beaten path than Cancun or the other mega beach establishments. Bus service is reliable and cheap, and you can basically pick the type of hotel or hostel you want to stay at to save money. The further you get from Mexico City, too, the cheaper it will undoubtedly be.

If you want some inspiration, check out a friend's website:

George and Audrey have been just about everywhere when it comes to historical sites in Latin America...

I haven't been down mexico way in a few years but when I did Baja back in 05 I paid 10US a night for a hostel and a at one place i found a bungalow on a bay that cost 15 a night but there were five of us in it so that was a way better deal than the hostel. Mexico is one of those places where you can plan and book everything ahead of time but you're more likely to find cheap accomodation after you arrive and do some snooping around!

If you do head into Guatemala I would definitely recommend going to Livingston. I was there in May last year with a habitat for humanity group and there weren't a lot of tourists there at all (it was the off season though). There was a beach near our worksite that had a completely random bar that served AMAZING margaritas a and long double layer pier with hammocks out in the ocean. We only saw two people outside of our group on the beach, and they were both backpackers. You could even see the coast of Belize from the beach. I never thought places like that even existed, it was like a photo out of National Geographic.

Another fun Guatamala adventure involved sailing up the Rio Dulce and staying at a place called Casa Guatamala. Google it, it's an amazing project and the hostel is freaking AWESOME! If we hadn't been so tired and exhausted from five days of work out in the humid heat it would have been even better. There was a party going on in the bar all night long, which kept us all awake, but on a better day would have been really fun. Plus, cheap meals that go to a really good cause. The entire hostel/restaurant is run by the Casa Guatemala orphanage and they produce all of the food served.

Long story short, I strongly urge you to visit Guatemala. Fewer tourists and an absolutely amazing place to visit.
