Default Central America Hostels

Just thought I'd put up a list of the places I stayed in Central America for future options/reference for everyone.

HONDURAS

Roatan (West End/Half-Moon Bay):
Coconut Tree Divers. US 5 dorm room with a/c, shower. Clean and quiet. Cold showers.
Copan Ruinas.
Manzana Verde (operated by Via Via). US 4 dorm room. Met good people there, although strict visitor policy and lots of mozzies! Cold showers.

GUATEMALA

Antigua
El Gato Negro (The Black Cat). 55 Quetzales/night (about US 7) including AMAZING breakfast (no drinks though) and internet. Dorms a bit small. Lukewarm showers.
Posada Ruiz 2. Q20 pp for a double, Q25 for a single. Decent rooms, decent showers. Quiet - no parties to be found here! internet cafe conveniently located next door.
Lago de Atitlan (San Pedro)
Vale Azul. 15 Quetzales pp for a triple (about US 2). Place kind of sucked. Lumpy beds and gross bathrooms, but good view of the lake!
Casa Elena. 20 Quetzales pp for a double (about US 2.70?). Clean, spacious rooms. Decently hot showers, although my towel got stolen from the line.
Lago de Atitlan (San Marcos)
El Unicornio.
Q35 pp for a double (about US 4.50). Cute little cabana things. Quiet, chill garden.
Hippy house above the lake (Sol's House). Free. No water or electricity, but amazing people and amazing times. Communal meals included with much love. Big spiders as part of wall decor.
Lanquin (for Semuc Champey).
El Retiro. Q35 pp for a dorm room (hammocks Q25? and lofts Q45?). Beautiful setting by the river. Clean, spacious rambling ranch-style buildings. Just a nice place to be...games, drinking and fun into the night.

EL SALVADOR

Ticabus Hotel (second stop coming in from Guatemala City). US 12 pp, horrible location, no food readily available, sketchy part of town. The first stop looked better - there was actually a restaurant there.

NICARAGUA

Leon
Bigfoot Hostel. 74 Cordoba/US 4 dorm room, US 5 pp for double. Good vibe, free wireless, pet tortoises wandering around, sketchy-looking pool, free pool table, cold showers, C25 mojitos at the bar. Dorms can be hot, so snag a fan if you can! Also run volcano boarding tours (US 19 + entrance fee).
Granada
The Bearded Monkey (El Barbo Mono). 110 Cordoba/US 6 dorm room. Good food, free internet.
Isle de Ometepe
Finca Magdalena. US 2 dorm room. Kind of felt like a bootcamp setup. Lush, gorgeous surroundings but not much to do there. Limited food options.
Hacienda Merida. US 5 dorm room. Better atmosphere, kayaks for rent, buffet-style breakfasts and dinners available.
San Juan del Sur
Casa Oro. US 6 dorm room, crowded but good crowd. Upstairs dorms a bit nicer. Free coffee.
Managua
Hospedaje El Molinito. US 6 pp double, private bathroom. Near Ticabus station, neighborhood kind of sucks but hotel was fine.

COSTA RICA

San Jose
Hostel Pangea. US 12 pp/double. Basic rooms, free internet, lots of spring breaker types in fluffy little dresses. Free coffee.
Parque Nacional Chirippo (Sas Gerardo)
Casa Mariposa. US 10 dorm room. Homey, cozy vibe - sweet dorm decor and has been worked at by some lovely tpunk lass.
Quepos.
The Wide-Mouth Frog. US 9 dorm room. Swimming pool and free (iffy) internet. Breakfast included (bread, fruit, oatmeal)
Monte Verde
Pension Santa Elena. US 5 dorm rooms. Great owner, good info...except that the main areas close at 10 p.m. so you need to find somewhere else to party. Free internet, hot showers!

I stayed in Vale Azul when i was in San Pedro and i totally agree with what you said - the place is pretty crappy, but the view is awesome! I only stayed there for 2 nights, then moved to another hostel.

Thanks for the updates. I'm off to Guatemala in October. I may couchsurf but we'll see. I'm a bit worried though, as the media has been playing up the violence and instability of the country. Evidently you went and had no problems. Thanks for the hostel list!
