Default Hitchhiking South America in 2011! Partners wanted!

Hi guys!

Ok, so here's the deal. I'm Stewart, I'm 22 and I'll soon be heading off on my RTW trip. I leave on October 1st when I'll head for China, Vietnam and then Indonesia. Basically, I'll be arriving in South America on February 4th 2011.

The Plan

I've posted on a few travel websites and am hoping to find a group of people to try and hitchhike from Santiago to Rio. We would all hitchhike in couples and stay in contact with one another as we each head out on our separate hitchhiking adventures! Ideally, I'd be looking to do this for about 3-4 months and finish in Rio, at which point I would fly home to London.

My rough route idea would take us South into Argentina. There's some amazing stuff down there through Patagonia etc. We could go as far as Ushuaia, the most Southerly city in the world! At this point we would head back up through the Valdez Peninsular, Buenos Aires, Iguazu and on into Brazil. Who knows how it would pan out, that's the beauty!

I arrive in Santiago on February 6th 2011, so we would depart from here on or around this date.

Hitchhiking

I suppose hitchhiking can never be 100% safe, but doing it in two's gives that extra bit of protection. We would be travelling around SA during our winter, so it would be there summer. This means warmer temperatures and more people on the roads to give us lifts! From stories I've heard and what I've read, SA seems like a great place to do it and it is completely possible to achieve!

We would be doing it on a budget, so hitchhiking, cheap hostels, maybe even some couch surfing from place to place.

Final Thoughts

That's the idea. Please get in touch if you like the sound of it and would fancy tagging along for the ride! If you want to look at my rough route, I made a google map of it which you can check out here (Sorry it's so big!)

Sweet idea! What gave you the idea to hitch in GROUPS of 2. I mean obviously it's easier to go in small groups, but why so many? Sounds really fun though...I wish I could come. Unfortunately I've committed myself to stay in the country (for the most part) for the next year or 2 and crawl my way out of debt lol. Needed to do it eventually...

GOOD LUCK!

Hey,

well I think hitchhiking alone would be pretty poor, you know, a bit boring and a bit dangerous as well I suppose!

When I was in Italy as bunch of us decided to hitchhike from Bologna to Nice. We did it in boy/girl couples and there were 8 of us in total. We made it into a bit of a competition and saw who would get there first. Some made it really quickly! We didn't make it at all, but we still got to see a tonne of cities and had a blast! It's funny hearing all the crazy characters that each group of us met!

Hopefully I can get something organized!

Unfortunately I haven't seen your post earlier. Nevertheless I hope you have fun and that you have found some nice mates. If you are back it would be great if you could write something about the trip. Would really be interested in it. As I already told I will travel to Europe in summer and maybe I will also hitchhike sometimes. We will see. At the moment I am trying to find out where I can get the best foreign exchange rates. Besides this I think I am ready and the trip can come. I will definitely tell you how it was.
