Beograd was cool. if you are looking for parties, the Serbians are the craziest. i will say of former Yugoslavia, the people of Beograd were the least nice. i had a hell of a time finding a hostel in Beograd, i was there in Winter and also on Serbian New Year so all the hostels were closed. The city is safe and i had no problems. The city is laid out really cool on top of a hill and it has a cool promenade. the Pizza Center is also the best pizza place in Europe, and it is cheap as hell. let me know if you have any more questions.

I agree with AdamTheCultrured... Bulgaria is amazing, great women there, AND the Hikers Hostel was awsome.... a bit hard to find. but a great place none-the less. Well i was actually on that same trip as Adam, but Bulgaria is a less traveled destination by americans then any place ive been to. Not many people speak english except in Sofia.

Romania is better than Bulgaria
I think Romania is better than Bulgaria. Romania looks much more like a European country, whether Bulgaria is more on the Oriental side. Although Bulgaria is cheaper, roads here are far worse than the ones in Romania. Besides, Bulgarian people hate it when you are different, e.g. I am here in Bulgaria with my girlfriend and a gay couple - they're friends of ours. So they ended beaten up by some pricks because they kissed each other on the street. When we were to Romania last month, however, they were not treated that way.
Bulgarian women are beautiful, but I think Romanian females are also on the beautiful side. However, guys here are total pricks, they might start beating you for no apparent reason, just because 'they don't like the way you look at them' or the way you're dressed etc. A friend of mine that was in Bulgaria 2 years ago was beaten up at a Bulgarian disco, because he was wearing a Metallica t-shirt. In Bulgaria you are expected to like their popular music (chalga, a.k.a pop-folk), which is totally disgusting and sounds like Turkish music. I prefer Romanian dance music (like Inna) any day of the week over that disgusting chalga!
In addition, Bulgarian drivers don't care about pedestrians at pedestrian crossings, you should be really careful while crossing or you might end up hit by a car. Those people drive like crazy! Romanian drivers also suck at driving, however, at least they stop when they see people on a pedestrian crossing. If I had to chose, I would never come here in Bulgaria!
