Default Travel Emergency Thread

OK so this thread is for everyone to use. Basically if you hear any news say virus outbreaks military coups or just freak weather you can put it here to warn other T-Punks.
If you're looking to go somewhere maybe check this thread if you're unsure.
Please just post warnings no social commentary we all know politicians act with no regard to travelers feelings.
So heres hoping this thread stays as empty as possible with no serious warnings!

p.s. PLEASE WRITE THE NAME OF THE COUNTRY IN BOLD

good call on this thread ben!

I have been meaning to post something about Kenya for a few days now. They've got a lot of political issues going on right now and from what I am reading, it's pretty dangerous because of tribal violence.

Here are a few recent news articles:

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/wor...9b8261&k=77393

http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5...vK61PEYHSPhyKA

I'm not sure what this means for travel in other parts of southern Africa, but I know Nairobi is a major airport in Africa so this is something to keep in mind.

Northern Egypt will now theoretically be safer for tourists now.

The terrorist group Tanzim Al-Jihad (responsible for killing tourists in the 90s) has annouced they are going to stop killing tourists and re-examine use of violence as a method. This is quite significant because Al-Jihad was basically one of the founding halves of al-Qaeda.

just an FYI for anyone going to Germany in the near future, they're apparently on "terror alert", whatever this means. Apparently they got some tip about terrorists targeting German military and judicial locations...

here's an article, it's kind of vague, but you get the idea...

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe....ap/index.html

doesn't really discuss what this means for travelers but I assume airport security will be tougher, meaning much more painful for travelers.

anyhoo just an FYI.

From Lonely Planet a warning about Casablanca,Morocco
Travel Warning: Terrorism Concerns - Western Sahara

In March and April 2007 several suicide bombings were carried out in Casablanca targeting Western interests. The overall threat of further attacks has increased, particularly in Casablanca. Travellers should exercise caution, pay attention to news reports regarding safety and heed any local advice regarding potential dangers.
The disputed territory of Western Sahara has a history of political instability and insecurity. Many areas of the Western Sahara are mined.
severity: Mid-level alert

Nicole, I believe the article is about Tibet, in particular Lhassa the capital. Everything is quiet on the southern side of the Himalayas.

giving this thread a bump because I just happened to be watching the news to see a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia (I believe it was the eastern side) and they've already issued out tsunami warnings.

I'm going to try and find an article on it or something more, so I will keep everyone posted.

UPDATE: this is what I found on the Associated Press' website

Here's an article I saw on CNN concerning tourism in Egypt in regards to the crazy conflict going on there.
