While I would certainly understand Americans not wanting to labled ignorant-which is an unfair lable, I have met many nice, polite intellegent Americans and I have also met many ignorant Canadians I agree that the only way Americans can stop this labeling (if indeed it can be stopped) is to wear their flag proudly and to do their flag and nation proud both home and abroad.

No one ever really acts surprised to hear I'm an American when I'm backpacking.
However I get a near universal look of shock and pity when I tell them I'm from Texas....

I haven't had any issues yet being American and backpacking. Maybe someone needs to pay me to backpack and do good PR for all the "regular" Americans. I think that's a great job idea. Maybe I'll get on the horn to the State Department and see if they can't make that into a real job. You know, simulate the economy AND improve foreign relations... everyone wins.
