I'm pretty sure all the companies use GSM, they've either shut down, or are in the process of shutting down the CDMA networks. (I have no idea what that means)

They're all GSM there. I used a pre-paid plan from Vodafone for the month that I was there and still had loooads of minutes left over at the end of it.
Verizon is CDMA, but they're in the US only. They're actually half owned by Vodafone, but for some reason use that *other* technology

I used Telstra when I was there(used their bigpond internet also). I don't know if it was just me, but I hated dealing with them. I had troubles with my phone and internet. Wasn't worth what I paid for them.

They're all GSM, and the best ones are 3 or Vodafone for value... It depends where you're going, we're a big Country and not everywhere gets coverage. Look up the individual websites and check their coverage maps
