I have lots of stories about Egypt! I still can't believe I went there and have been back for a month now!! I was SO sad to leave but I smile because it happened....I will post something in the travel story section, but I have to think about what to say because I could go on for hours about it! But as I posted somewhere else, GO if you ever have the opportunity....you will love it there.

More stuff in Italian:

Leave me in peace- lasce me in pace! (you will need this if you are a female traveling alone, or two girls traveling alone, or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6.)
go away!- vai via!
I dont know- no lo so

And then nice stuff
Ciao bello-a Hi beautiful (o if its a guy, a if its a girl)
qual e tuo numero di telefono- whats your number
mi piace- I like it (or translated totally literally- it gives me pleasure)
ti piace?- do you like it?
dove discoteca? wheres a club

Oh, and a's are always pronounced ahhhh
u's are ooooh (like boot)
e's are ay
i's are eeee
o's are oh.

c's followed by i or e are pronounced ch like church our cheese
g's followed by i or e are pronounced juh like jam
unless they have an h after the g or the c in which case they are just normal (kinda oposite of english)
Why in the hell am I writing this when I still dont have a flight home and only have a limited time to look??? if anybody has cheap flight advice from Europe to the Cali, let me know!

i imagine you speak chinese just behind your teeth, with a not too wide open throat - haha, i've never tried, but all those shar shar type sounds make me think it'd be how you spoke it.

Yes, Mandarin is tonal - which means the same syllable spoken with a different "tone" can mean something different. Sounds complicated - but ultimately it's more efficient (words are shorter) and context usually makes your meaning obvious, anyways...

Joan - Hmm, you may be right. It may be more vocally-efficient too - as it seems you could speak it with moving your lips less? Could make it harder for deaf people to read your lips tho?

I heard if you know one of the Romance languages, then you'll be fine in the countries... that's what my aunt told me. I'm nearly fluent in Spanish (just 3 more classes before I take the fluency test @ school!) and I'm going to Italy and she said I should be fine if I just brush up on some of the common sayings (which, by reading this board, I already have!), so is this true?

Knowing a Romance language makes it much easier to learn other Romance languages... Dunno about how well it'll help you understand other ones right off the bat, though - pronunciation, intonation, and how damn fast the locals talk makes it difficult. (But yeah, reading signs & printed material is easier...)

I'd highly recommend getting familiar with basic phrases, and if possible, listening to examples of the language being spoken.

I'm 10 days into Dutch now - so I can read and understand at a basic level, but hearing people talk at native speed still spins my head around.
