Default What language books do you have?

I was going over my collection of phrasebooks and dictionaries and realized I had 8+ languages covered.

German - Phrasebook and Grammar book (some CDs)
Spanish - Dictionary
French/Italian - Phrasebook and tapes
Norwegian/Swedish/Danish/Icelandic/Finnish - Phrasebook (Dictionary and tapes for Norwegian)
Japanese - Dictionary, phrasebook and Kanji de Manga comic books
Chinese - Mandarin phrasebook, and 2000 character book

I don't intend to ever learn much of these languages (just Spanish and some of Japanese/Chinese/German) just enough to get by for the most part. Anyone else do the same thing?

At home I definitely have a lot of Malay books, dictionaries and the same goes for Mandarin...but those are for languages I am supposed to be functional in although the Chinese is lacking...some day I will aim to be perfectly trilingual, hah.

The only language book I´ve bought for travel purposes is my little Latin American Spanish phrasebook, which has come in handy.

I don't have any books but I used rosetta stone to learn some spanish and totally recommend it. a few weeks of doing that for an hour a day helped me immensely in spain.

I have a french phrasebook and italian audio cd set, an eastern european phrasebook and a western european phrasebook (the ones that have a bit of pretty much each country in that area).

I mainly brought them because they were cheap, but hopefully next year I can put them to use!

My high school Spanish teacher had this funny book called "Mierda!" on her desk (highly inappropriate mind you!) and so my best friend got it for me for Christmas one year. I got it out the other night...too funny! It actually has some helpful stuff in it for traveling to Spanish speaking countries...but mostly I just find it hilarious!

I've got a French textbook from a college French course I took and a phrasebook for the road and an Italian phrasebook. didn't really use the italian phrasebook much in italy though... it was much easier for me to speak spanish and they understood mostly if they weren't english speakers.

Let's see.. not all of these are books, but they are in my arsenal of language-learning methods, so I thought I'd share anyway.

> Russian - Rosetta Stone levels 1 and 2, a little dictionary
> French - various workbooks, two different dictionaries, and a book called Tune Up Your French
> Hebrew - Colloquial Hebrew pdf, Byki flashcards, Pimsleur levels 1 and 2, and a wonderful Hebrew speaking boy to help me sometimes
> Greenlandic - some Excel spreadsheet that I downloaded from a website
> Icelandic - Byki flashcards, Icelandic Online account
> Romanian - Pimsleur level 1
> Languages in general - How to Learn Any Language, by Barry Farber

If you haven't read it yet, the Barry Farber book is really inspiring, and a pretty short read - you can probably download it from somewhere online if you look, or else I could try to email it to you if you ask.

Currently several Russian textbooks and Rosetta stone
German - Rosetta stone, Colloquial German
Lithuanian - Colloquial Lith, Beginners,
Spanish - Puertas series
French - a riduculous number, I'm a French major
Baltic phrasebook
European phrasebook - about 8 or 9 languages, I can't remember
Thai phrasebook
Arabic phrasebook
some great old textbooks, Russian and French, that my mom dug up from somewhere

language, travel, books - the other trinity

My suggestion would be to start with posture. The change in the posture of the characters depending on what mood they are in. The move could be more and more nervous when excited or agitated, or very funny when she is happy and at peace. eye movements can also help, as more people move their eyes when frightened, while staying focused calm.

I discovered a few years ago that the San Francisco public library had an online version of Rossetta Stone for anyone with a library card to use for FREE! It was pretty awesome.

Since then, they've changed from Rossetta to a program called Mango (I guess RS is no longer offering their library program). I'm just starting the French course - I'm so bad at language, so I hope it goes well!

If you go to Mango Languages | Learn a Language, Learn Spanish, Learn Chinese Fast you can search to see if your library has it too!
