Biometric passports
I am applying for a new British passport-this will be my third British passport but my first one with a biometric chip. My room mate who will be getting his first biometric passport said he was tempted to make sure his chip "accidentally" broke. Now, I am against biometric chipping but my question is, if my new passport suffers an...accident and the chip breaks how will this affect my passport? I told my room mate that I would be concerned that no one would accept his passport if the chip broke and my chip will probably remain intact and in 1 piece-I was just wondering what would happen is all.
By the way I should take this time to point out that I am not endorsing anyone destroying their chip-I am merely asking a hypothetical question.

Right now if you disable the chip they'll still accept the passport. But they might screen you more to ensure the passport is not forged.
And actually I don't think anyone is using the biometrics yet, the chip mainly just sends them the data on your passport page without them having to swipe the MRZ through a scanner (the MRZ is "Machine Readable Zone", that area that encodes your name and passport number and whatnot like P<<<<UK<<<<EXPAT<<<<BEN<<<<)
