Travel Clinic for Americans

I recently went to my family doctor to get my immunizations for my upcoming trip and she informed me that it would most likely be cheaper, and better, to go to a national clinic known as Passport Health. There's locations in all the states (I think). My doctor informed me that physicans usually have to order certain vaccines (ie. yellow fever) and usually the client has to pay extra costs for that.

Anyway I wanted to post the price lists of the shots from Passport Health. I figured it would help other Americans in similiar situations - I know Canada, the UK and most other countries have clinics similiar which are free or very cheap. So here's a US resource.

All you do is call up your local center and tell them you'd like to make an appointment and they're ask you when and where you're traveling and have a packet of information all ready for you. I found them very nice, helpful and professional!

Office visit: $38
Hepatitis A: $80 (two shots - 6 months apart)
Hepatitis B: $75
Influenza: $25
Japanese Encephalitis: $125
MMR: $65

IPOL (polio booster): $45

Doxycycline (antimalaria med): $20 for 50# - 100mg pills

yes, these places are definitely the way to go.

FYI to anyone needing malaria meds-- chloroquine has been proven to do absolutely SQUAT to prevent malaria in almost all countries where the virus is rampant. All those gin & tonics the British consumed during their time in the subcontinent apparently made the virus a little resistant!

Consider doxy, or if you don't like antibiotics and can pay a little (ok, a LOT) more, Malarone instead. Larium is another effective one but it's been known to cause psychotic dreams and extreme paranoia in many people... I took Malarone and suffered no side effects. Nor did I contract Malaria.

If you want permanent tan take Dox. It increases photo sensitivity and makes you susceptible to sunburn. I have not been able to shake off my tan ever since. If I had the choice now, I would take malarone. If you happen to be on the road then you will need to locate a reputable travel clinic.
