I haven't done a true backpacking trip yet- I'm not set to leave until the spring of 2010, but I'm leaving for a year with my first leg in Central America.
I'm reseaching C.A.- mainly using lonelyplanet.com as a guide- and there are so many activities and things that are so appealing to me- but realistically how do I avoid blowing my money away on things: mainly diving.
I don't want to get too ambitious and get stuck in a tourist trap doing things like white water rafting, rappeling, diving, surfing etc. But at the same time I don't want to miss out on something thats really important to me (mostly diving..<3...other divers can sympathize I hope!).
Should I just hide away on a farm and do WWOOFing for a few weeks and only venture out on weekends?
I'm afraid that becuase C.A. is my first stop, I will be too hyper and want to do everything/anything and thus spend alot of money !
P.s.
I plan to do alot of surfing and snorkeling while in C.A....would it be feesable to buy my own stuff (snorkel gear and a surf board) either from other backpackers or shops while I'm down there- take it around with me for the 3.5 months I'm there, then sell it or give it away? Has anyone else done this? Am I just getting to ambitious and dreaming a bit too much?....I know everyone is saying your plans change as soon as you step off the plane
