Crime in Mexico
Has the media reported cartel related crime in Mexico deterred you from taking a trip there?
I have gone the last 4 year, flying in, and have had no issues (Cancun, and Mazatlan), I felt comfortable in both cities and on the associated tours. From the locals this year, they say that the federal government has really cracked down on interior cities. The borders are still a hot mess. It seems that the government is also securing the federal highways a bit more.
Any thoughts?
As most places I like in Mexico are far from the U.S. border, I will probably always fly, and perhaps rent a vehicle if need be.

Glad to hear that your trips have gone well. I have been thinking about flying into cancun sometime this fall and traveling around the Yucatan and possible into Belize, but have been wondering about the violence. Did you traveling outside the cities much?

In Cancun I've gone down to Playa Del Carmen, and been to Chichen Itza. Quintana Roo (the state Cancun is in) is cleared by the State Department, and it seems relatively safe. There looks to be a safe direct route to Belize.
Mazatlan, mostly just in the city. It looks like most of the violence takes place in the north. I just read up on news before I go and make sure I know where Consulates are in the event something were to happen. Better safe than sorry, and so far nothing short of excellent.
I've never rented a car, but I have used public transportation, the bus system around Cancun is pretty decent and inexpensive.
Here is the link for bus service from Cancun to Belize
