Europe Visas?

Hey everyone!!

I am having trouble understanding these visa rules. Now i want to go backpacking around Europe for 3 to 4 months. Now i have just been told that i will need to have visas after 3 months, no matter what country in eruope i am in.

And I thought i had 3 months in each country!!!

So what do i do. What i do have is an Ancestry VIsa for the UK. but Poland and Netherlands are on my list of countries to see before the UK and what happens if i dont see them all within 3 months.

Any comments would be great!!

If I got this right....you can stay in any country in Europe for a max of 3 months. You can stay in Europe itself for however long you want...just don't spend over 3 months in Germany/Italy/Austria/Czech (etc..) or they'll deport yo ass.

So as long as you keep moving through different countires you are fine. A girl I met in Switerland was living there for a year, so every 3 months she left the country for a day then went back. I don't know if this is legal...but she thinks it was a loop hole, and as far as I know she's still there.

It depends what countries you want. For EU countries, you have 90 day period before you can get deported. Not for each country, but the EU itself. You have to spend time outside of the country and 1 day is not enough, the person pinion met could be deported, but needs to be 90 days. So really, you are allowed 90 days in a 180 day period.
So...If you want to spend time in countries not in the EU do it at the beginning or end of the trip.
As for what to do if you want to spend more than 4 months in the EU? I don't know and have never been able to find an answer.

The ancestry visa will change this though becasue you can be in the UK for longer periods. I have a student visa and my time in the UK doesn't count as part of my 90 days. But I don't know if it's the same.

As for what happens when you do overstay 90 days...I've heard anything from being let back into the union anyways, turned away at the border, and immediately deported at the persons cost and a big black X in their passport which makes it very hard for them to get back into Europe at all now.

That's all I know, but the whole thing is confusing so maybe someone else has other info.

I reckon i will just make sure i am in the UK by the time my 3 months is up. Surely everyone loves Australians and wouldnt deport one!

Here's the deal DOC. This is for Americans, who tend to have more freedom when it comes to Visas than most, and I really have no idea about Australian's restrictions, you should contact your embassy.

Anyway: In all of the 17 EU countries with the exception on Scandanavia, Switzerland, and the UK.....you have 90 days TOTAL out of 180. So you can travel in these countries for up to 3 months out of every 6, but if you stay for 3 months straight, you must leave for 3 months before you come back. The good news is that these 3 months can be spent in Switzerland(has same 3 month thing as the EU but is separate from their timeline), or the UK, which for Americans, has a 6 months out of 12 standard.

Now, being an Aussie, you should be able to get a working holiday visa for the UK, and I'm pretty sure that entitles you to the same freedoms as UK citizens while you're there but you should send a private message to urOZm8 or ozpacka to find out the details of the Aussie stuff cuz I think they've both done it.

Any commonwealth country can qualify for a UK working holiday visa (not just oz)... but you can only get it once.

while we're on the topic, does anybody know about how an american applying for european union citizenship works?

i'm moving to portugal for a year in 2006(hopefully.., that's not what i would need it for. but i'm moving to france in 2008(hopefully also) for at least 4 years and i just think that citizenship would probobly be helpful.

so anybody know how willing they are to give americans EU citizenship? thanks

Answer: NOT VERY.

Believe me, we're all trying to figure out a way to accomplish exactly that! Probably the easiest way to get your foot in the door is to marry an EU citizen. Other than that it's extremely-- EXTREMELY-- difficult.

*edited to add: well, not ALL of us are trying to figure out how to become EU citizens, but a good portion of us are.

Yeah getting an EU citizenship is really hard, apperently these days even marrying a European girls sometimes isnt enough, probably the easiest way too get one is if your a multi millionare thats got a lot of development projects going on in some country and the government recognizes your contributions enough ahhh big ol fat chance on that one. that site up there is really helpful. and!! since im planning on going to college in europe for 4 years, if i go in france i'll be eligible for a residency permit, and if i keep that for X amount of years then im elligible for citizenship!!!!!! yay!!! i might have missed some fine print somewhere, but that's what it looks like after a couple of e-mails and about 20 websites, half of which were in french, haha.

Okay, just to clarify - if you go to the EU (barring said countries) for 90 days, even if you're hopping from one to another, you only have 90 days, unless you leave the country for another 90, then you can come back? Ugh. What happens if you don't? Anyone have experience?

Oh, another question - what if you're in the EU for 72 days and head to the UK for 14 - does that mean that 14 days are taken off or do you start over???
