Itinerary Maybe - TravelPUNK Backpacker College Student Budget Travel Message Boards!

So I sketched out a basic itinerary for my 12 days in Europe:

Oslo -> Barcelona -> Madrid -> Rome -> Budapest -> Munich -> Paris -> London -> Oslo

But I know this will change. lol. Just the other day I was looking at Munich on the map and noticed how close I would be to Austria (which I have always wanted to visit), and then Zurich. So I've pondered how nice it would be to rent a car, since I can bounce around to those cities pretty easily. Hmmm... oh the thoughts.

I may just never come back.

When are you going on this trip? I'm trying to working in Poland somehow, but am really, really tempted by Vienna and Budapest. But I don't have money for all these trips!

So it is set now...

Oslo -> Copenhagen -> Budapest -> Bratislava -> Prague -> Zywiec, Poland -> Munich -> Paris -> London -> Oslo.

It basically came down to scheduling and price. lol. It was cheapest to get back to Oslo from London, cheapest to London from Paris so they setup the end of my trip. I opted for more eastern europe over western europe this trip.

But the interesting thing I didn't notice when I booked this, is that I will be in Paris on Easter Sunday. Although I am not a good Catholic, I was thinking it would be super to go to Mass for Easter. Looking for pointers on that. Was thinking I might try to get to Notre Dame.

I hate to see you miss Madrid on this trip, but completely understand about the pricing. While in Poland, I heard that Krakow is where it's at.

As far as Easter Sunday in Paris, that's pretty cool. There may be outdoor processions (like a religious parade) there like they do all over Spain.

Don't forget to rent a city bike in Copenhagen (other other cities if you can) as that is a great way to explore the city and discover things way off the beaten path.

This is a very ambitious itinerary. Are you flying from Copenhagen to Budapest?

Yes, I fly to Copenhagen from Oslo and from Copenhagen to Budapest.

Ambitious yes, but a little taste of many things. It's how it has to be.

It sounds like you've made up your mind here but if I were you I would cut a lot of these places. As the itinerary is now, you have some gigantic travel times. You run the risk of being tired/exhaustion and the whole thing looking like a blur.

If you're looking for a "taste" Prague, Poland, Bratislava and Budapest are similar enough that you could cut them - well unless you're a Hapsburg groupie haha

Even what I suggested is a little intense but like I said...9 cities in 12 days PLUS travel time is quite intense.

Also - I was in Paris on Easter one year and I checked out the service at Notre Dame. I had no idea what they were saying but it was still a very interesting experience!

Sorry bro, but I have to agree with Elizabeth here in a big way. The "blur/exhaustion" factor is indeed something to think about... Trust me, its not as fun as you think to jump long distances every 1-2 days... But either way, enjoy your first EU trip!

I'm always an advocate for slower type travel which allows you to really discover some off the beaten path gems and even meet locals that can take your travel experience to a whole nutha level.

However, I also understand Rob's intentions of just getting a glimpse of as many places as possible to whet his his appetite for future backpacking trips.

Seeing how many times he's gone back and forth to Las vegas and Mexico over the years, I'm pretty sure he'll add Europe to his regular rotation of travel destinations.

On your current itinerary, Rob, I would probably spend any extra days in Oslo checking out the fjords.

Yeah, like I said, I know I will miss many things, but it's the overall experience I know I will enjoy. Plus with the internet these days its so easy to plan out many aspects. For instance I have my time in Oslo pretty much planned out. Which museums I want to see, I want to go down to Drobak, and it's all pretty easy to plan. Now that I have my itinerary planned I can go through and plan a lot of it. But of course I can change that at any instant.

I really don't have anything that I MUST do in Europe, which is the nice part. I know many people want to get everything done. I don't. I could wander around the city for the day just looking at stuff and eating at some local restaurant and that would be great for me. I will be back. I may find out I like Oslo better than I thought I would Prague or whatever. I like the adventure idea, and being by myself I don't have to worry about anyone being upset that I didn't go to something.

I know I am far different from most people, but I've been that way for a long while.

Thats exactly how I travel. There is never anything that I HAVE to see. I love just planning my day to be unplanned. I wake up and go to bed at no particular times and my days basically wander, eat, wander, eat, repeat.

You'll have a blast, man. The only thing I would say is to try to meet people in every city. Force yourself if you have to. The international friendships that you create just elevates the whole "travel to a foreign country" experience to another level.
