Amazon Rainforest Backpacking
Anyone ever been to the Amazon rainforest? I am thinking of going to Brazil for about two weeks at the end of next week (last min trip planning) and was thinking it would be nice to do some sort of jungle trek.
I've done some research and the rough schedule would be: fly into Manaus (which is a city right smack in the middle of the rainforest) which I can use as a base and hire a guide for a jungle walkabout for a few days. Then after about a week, I would fly to Rio and spend the rest of my time hanging out on beaches and enjoying the city.
But I am a little worried about the Amazon portion of it... I really want to see the damn thing, and I've gone solo to some moderately crazy places (Middle East) but I am worried that backpacking solo in the Amazon may be dangerous in the sense that that would be a place that you really want someone to be watching your back. (Then again, so would Syria). However, if it was a place that is pretty frequented by travellers, I think I'll be OK as I will make friends and we can watch each other's backs.
So has anyone ever been to the Amazon? Been to Manaus? Is it a place where a lot of backpackers go this time of year?
