Answers, I need ANSWERS ;-)
Hello All,
I'm new to this fine forum...I would like to begin with a question that came up after viewing the film "The Darjeeling Limited"...the gents in the film buy opium and other drugs in India as if it were aspirin. Are there no drug laws prohibiting the open sale of such items? If anyone can clear this up for me, I'd be quite thankful!
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to meeting everyone! Cheers!

Welcome to TravelPunk!
No, its not that open. In some places, marijuana/hash is very available, but its still not really "open." You can probably find opium and whatever though, and you probably wouldn't have to look very hard.

Thanx...
I was just surprised when I saw it on the film...my friends and I couldn't decide if it was limited to Hollywood (or would it be Baliwood in this case? haha) or if it was really open like that. I guess it would make sense, opium being such a huge cash-crop there. Thanx again for the info...
And don't come to Cali anytime soon! You can't breath here!!!!

haha, yeah . . . sorry you gotta deal with that right now. What city are you in? Hope you're okay! I missed all the excitement, but my family had to evacuate a couple of months ago due to several forest fires near Susanville (way NorCal).

No, opium is not at all that readily available. It is, after all, a movie. Actually the penalties for purchasing or using drugs in most of India is at least as harsh as in most of the Western world, if not even more so in many parts of the country.
Although if you're interested, the most common opium production area is in Northern Pakistan, about 2000 miles west of Darjeeling...
