Default crossing borders over land

Does your passport get stamped if you cross borders over land in South America?

Just checked my passport and it looks like in 2008 I got stamped on both sides of the border going from Ecuador-Peru and Argentina-Uruguay-Argentina (which was actually by ferry). The rest of my SA crossings were by plane.
