Arrow the Bearded Monkey - Granada, Nicaragua

This hostel was full when I arrived so I paid $4 US to sleep on one of their benches. They are gross - but at least they have a box under the bench cushion which you can put your things in - just bring your own lock, and deal with your things smelling like old rotted wood.

The hostel common area is very large, in the center there is a garden area which has an open ceiling so it's nice for air flow but bad for letting mosquitos in. There are many hammocks around and tables set up. They have a bar and restaurant which is a little pricey for the quality of food, but hey it's better than nothing. You don't pay for anything up front. You have everything put on your tab so it's easy to rack up the money, watch yourself.

They have a TV room, book shelves, and spacious dorm rooms. The rooms are decent, beds are clean and comfortable. There are only ceiling fans in the dorms so if you're on a bottom bunk it can get really hot and muggy. The bathroom area is on the other side of the hostel and the showers really suck. The water pressure is basically non-existant on most days, and the water shuts off daily for a few hours. Make sure you take a shower early in the morning.

The staff is helpful but not overly friendly. This place is set up well to meet others, but certain aspects kinda suck..the bathrooms being the main sucky point. I forgot how much I paid for the dorm rooms, but it's reasonable. Under $10 US.

This hostel is located near other hostels and close to the bars, restaurants, and nightlife.

Sucks about the bathrooms and sleeping on a funky bench, but for the most part it sounds like it's aiight.

Thanks for this review!

So, I spent 6 nights at the bearded monkey before changing to Amigos... I needed a change of scenary... I liked the Bearded Monkey... Met sooooo many people, and the party is always on there... It can get a bit dangerous... The showers are showers, after a month in Nica. My expectations of showers is VERY low.... The food is good, pricey, but the local tax is included, so its about the same as a local restaurant... The staff is pretty unfriendly, but the number of backpackers coming and going at this place, it only makes since... Its also open to the public, so i still pop in everyother night or so for happy hour... Great hammocks, etc...The bar on weekends is fun, as its usually an expat volunteer working the bar... I had no problems there, and am actually going back next week for a few nights again...
