I have a triband phone and I'd like to have mobile service while I'm in Greece (one month). I've found Telestial's sim card at $49USD with $10USD's worth of "load", at a rate of $0.38USD a minute. That's less than half an hour, but supposedly you could buy additional airtime all over the place.

Is this a good deal? Is there something else that I can get online? Or should I just wait until I get to Athens?

(THREE WEEKS TO GO! WHOO!)

Thanks!

What service do you have in the US? If you're with Cingular or T-mobile, a half hour of overseas roaming time is $30 - less than the cost of that sim plus minutes... but if you're going so spend around $50 (that's what I do overseas) it comes out to be a better deal, based on what pre-paid plans the local companies offer.

For that matter, is your phone already unlocked and capable of working on all four bands of GSM?

The unlock issue is key. If you have Cingular, you can call them and badger them into giving you an unlock code. Not sure about the others. Some are a real pain in the ass and will not do it.

Most of the carriers will do an unlock if you've been with them for 6 months. Some for 3 months.. basically, as long as you've paid them enough to balance out how much of your phone they subsidized If not, you can look up some local mom & pop wireless shop (check Craigslist under "unlock phone") who'll do it for about $20.

Actually, I bought this phone in Hong Kong (and used a pre-paid sim card there for several months). When I got back stateside, I just popped my old sim card back in, and it worked fine. Guessing that means it's unlocked...right?

But I'll double-check. Thanks guys!

Default One more deal!

There is one more deal I'd suggest: The sim card is 19 USD (it does not expire-it's a life-time sim card), the cost per min in Greece is $0.69, BUT, all the charges are done on a post-paid basis, so you'll talk as much as you want and pay at the end of the month for the minutes you used.
