Default Train across Canada

I just booked a 30 day north american rail ticket and I'm stoked. My friend is moving to montreal so I'm going along for the ride (and the ride back). We're going to leave BC just before xmas. He lives way up north and I live way down south so we'll rendezvous in Jasper, head to Edmonton, chill with my family in Winnipeg, then keep heading east. I've rarely been east of Winnipeg so I'm excited for that. We might overshoot the mark and go to Halifax or something, and we'll probably do a bit of a trip south to go to NYC and maybe DC or Philly since our passes allow US travel too.

ANYONE traveled across Canada on the train? Wisdom and advice are precious, please share!

Molly

I've not done it myself, but it's something that's been on my "want to do" list. Let us know how it is.

I always heard of a train that goes through Canada during the winter that is absolutely gorgeous. Don't know anything beyond that. Regardless, that sounds like a great trip. I'm not sure if Canadian Rail is better than Amtrak, but all I've ever heard was bad things about Amtrak. Regardless, a cross country trip on rail is something I plan on doing myself.

why do I recall that it only goes so far during the winter time? Or maybe that's the busing system...

Yeah, it's supposed to be beautiful. I grew up in Winnipeg but I've been on the west coast for 11 years so I'm going to have to get some winter clothes!

Simply Angelic, as far as I can tell all the routes run in winter but they are pretty limited in the first place.

Well I just took the train last week from Banff to Vancouver. It was gorg of course...It was the rocky mountaineer train. I think the via rail train goes thru the rockies at night which would suck a bit. But what an epic trip your planning. awesome.
