I unfortunatly stayed for one night at Hostel 639 in London - and a little word of advice DON'T

The showers are in the dorm rooms...even the mixed dorms...but ok I can deal with that

The whole place is a little shady and reminds me of a crack house...but ok I can deal with that too

It's in the middle of frickin no where, but it is next to the tube station...although it takes you 30min to get into central London... but alright no problem

But the thing that really broke this hostel for me... IT BACKS UP TO A CEMETARY
That's right the lovely view out of all the back windows in of a cemetary that has seen better days, the crosses are all falling over, the graves are coming out of the ground, and I swear to god if that place isn't haunted I will die from shock

So moral of the story - dont stay at hostel 639 while in London, there are way better places to spend you're hard earned money

That reminds me of my family home, there's a very old graveyard out the back of it.

Well what is wrong with a crackhouse next to a death place?
One word convinience they thought about everything:
A) they sell the spot and the crack
B) You shoot in your room
C) You O.D
D) they clean the mess in the same place (you said the showers were 'aight there right!)
E) Well you know where the corpse finish!

Woo Hooo!
Oh and if they need an escape well the Tube is right there!

So now we now where the green dude is.

Oh man guys it was awful...tear - ok come on hot tpunk guys come comfort me
No but seriously I swear to god this place was haunted and if it isn't I'm going to go there and die so that I can haunt it
The funniest thing is that if you go to hostelworld.com and read the reviews they arn't bad at all, they just say that it's close to the tube and blah blah...I think they paid people to say that, or else they put them up themselves - so that's why the guy I was traveling with picked it - ya that't the last decision he got to make for the whole trip

That is BAD-ASS! I love old cemetaries! Seeing old graves from the 1600s, 1700s, etc...and trying to imagine the story that accompanied that person's life is so interesting.

OK, so each dorm has an en suite bathroom with shower? Sounds like a positive to me!
Right next to a tube station (Kensal Green)? Sounds like a positive to me!
Historic cemetary out the back? Sounds like a positive to me!

The only downside would be this "reminders of a crackhouse" thing...if it signified the hostel was not in a less-than-safe area, then it's a negative. If it's just a little run down and the neighborhood is overall pretty safe, then not such a negative.

Biggest deciding factor? Price. :D
And guess what? It ties the Royal Bayswater Hostel for cheapest bed-price for mock dates in May 2007! (BUT...the Bayswater doesn't include taxes while Hostel 639 does)
Free breakfast & linen rental, a 20 minute walk from Portobello Road (Notting Hill)...

Next time I go to London, I think I'll try a night in this place just to see if you're right and it's not worth it...
Hmmm...any other T-Punkers brave enough to try a night or two at this hostel to see if it's shite or golden?

^^^^ I thought the same thing. I'd love to stay somewhere near a cemetar.

By the way, here's a link to the hostel's location on Google Maps...you can see the cemetary out back and its proximity to the tube station...

link-a-dink

Ok all the plus ain't quite what they seem -

there is NO en-suite bathroom, there is literally a shower stall in the corner of the room, that's it, and ours had a delightful mat of back hair in it (I know that's not the hostel's fault but still....ew)

but hey the hostel's gotta rock someone's boat or else it'd be out of buisness right?

so i guess I should have said :

if you like cemetrys and shower stalls with mats of back hair in them and the homey feel of a crackhouse then by all means pay the €10 to stay at hostel 639

good times

oh and by the way thanks for puting that picture up - I can dye the hair any color i want but im still blonde

Yeah that view looks pretty tight to me. Although Kensal Green isnt really that great of an area to base yourself in London. Its semi ghetto and a little far away from the desired areas to visit in London. The hostel probably caters more to immigrants than the traveller set.

I'm the same way Matt! When Mike & I went to Jamaica last year I was having a ball reading all the old headstones in the old church cemetery - you know, the ones where they tell a little story about the person. Mike thought it was morbid. I'm fascinated!

Even though we all seem more interested in the hostel now than before thank you very much for the input. I know that some punkers will be very glad to know that there is a cemetary and a crack house feel to the place and will think twice. Well done!

I'd call the cemetary the only REDEEMING quality of the place... cool
