Thailand & Sydney Jan 2011
Hey everyone!!
I've just booked tickets to Thailand & Sydney in Jan 2011!! Can't wait
This is a solo trip, but the first 5 nights I am going to be at a hotel with a few people one of whom I know through twitter, so we are going to Koh Pha Ngan for the full moon/new years party other than that no clue what I'm going to do!!
Pretty much I have a month in Thailand/anywhere else close, Laos, Vietnam,Cambodia maybe? Not sure where yet, any suggestions are more than welcome!!
I know the other people are planning on doing some Gibbons (Monkey) Experience, then tubing in Laos and some time in Bangkok but not sure if I will stay with them or not.
Then I have a week in Sydney!! Hurrah two places I've always wanted to go in one trip!!
Any advice would be fantastic!!

I really liked The Rocks in Sydney. Definitely take a ferry while you're there to Manly Wharf. You get a great view of the city from the water too. What else...Bondi Beach and the Opera House are pretty standard spots to check out. If you have time you should check out Melbourne as well. Never been to Thailand but if I were going I'd check out the Phi Phi Islands where "The Beach" was filmed.

Can you speak Thai, mooloo? I suggest you to bring HNHSoft Thai phrase book with you so that you can communicate with the local people. The phrase book can be installed on your mobile device. Very convenient.
Have a nice trip!

The Blue Mountains are pretty cool. They're a 2 hr train ride out of central Sydney. The Three Sisters are the major tourist hot spot. You'll get to see some fairly classic Aussie terrain if you head out that way.
As for Thailand, I've only been to Koh Samui - I didn't think it was very good. Angkor Wat in Cambodia is way up there on my to-do list.
I might be back in Sydney in January. If I am, we should try to get a meetup happening - I've got a whole lotta NZ questions for ya.
Have fun!!

Thinking about making the jump when I finish uni. It won't be for a while yet, but there's no harm in starting the research early.

Great place to stay in Sydney is the Palms hostel which is in the potts point/kings cross area. It has some great people their and most of the people are working holidayers and great to party with and it is not located on the main strip of kings cross which is quiet and without the prostitutes and drug addicts and the liquor store and great pizza parlour are around the corner. Dan is the manager of the hostel and puts together trips to Bondi and the Blue mountains every few weeks and Jackson is the night manager and is good at helping you with getting around and also hits the goon hard. But overall good place with great people and great location with a fair price. I paid $150 a week for a 4 bed dorm room with our own washroom. The downtown core of Sydney is a 15 minute walk and the subway station is less then 5 minutes away. Of all the places I stayed at this was the best hostel. Hope I helped you out

Hey i'm going to thailand next week, but staying clear of the south.
Perhaps somethign to keep an eye on...
Southern Thailand declared disaster zone
English.news.cn 2010-11-02 18:21:11 FeedbackPrint RSS
BANGKOK, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen districts in the Southern province of Surat Thani were declared disaster zones, said its governor on Tuesday afternoon.
Surat Thani Governor Thirayuth Aiumtrakul declared 16 provinces of Surat Thani -- Muang, Kanchanadit, Don Sak, Pun Pin, Tha Chang, Chaiya, Tha Chana, Ban Nasarn, Viangsra, Prasaeng, Chai Buri, Khirirat Nilhom, Vibhavadee Rangsit, Phanom, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan as flood disaster zones.
The zones include the tourist islands of Samui and Phangan. Unconfirmed reports said that all power was out on the island of Samui, Bangkok Post online reported.
A depression landed on many provinces in the Southern Thailand at about 02:00 a.m. local time on Monday. Flash floods later hit the provinces on Tuesday morning.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva Tuesday afternoon flew to the South to inspect the flood-hit provinces.
Earlier last week, the northeastern and central parts of the country were hardly hit by floods with the death tolls on Tuesday rise to 104.

Have a good time! I swear by the wakeup! hostel in Sydney, no place like it! It's massive, the staff are great and it takes good care of new comers.
Also, I'm really keen to hear about Thailand as I'm going next March for a month!
