Traveling with Grandma

Might I suggest something along the lines of Untours. Its a travel agency run by a guy from my hometown. They basically rent you a house somewhere in Europe, you'll get to meet some of the towns/city folk when you first arrive. I think they hook you up with a car too. But the whole idea is you have a regular house in the area, amongst the people of wherever you're visiting. This might give you the freedom to explore the area as you wish, but also provide Grandma and her bf a nice, safe, comfy cozy environment without that sterile boring feeling of a hotel.

The whole company sounds pretty cool - I only know about it since he's from my area. But the owner, despite doing so well, lives on 35K a year and gives everything else to charity or back into the company/emoloyees. But I digress...

Check out the Untours, its always sounded like a neat concept to me.

Sorry, I dont think I can be of much help. I dont have any grandparents so I cant say. I do however look after an elderly coupld (82 and 92) and they adore going to Italy. Verona to be exact. Or the south of Italy. Not exactly cheap though.

I really like places like Cornwall. But also Yorkshire though it rains aquiet a bit.

I like the rental house/cottage idea, too. England, Ireland, Wales or Scotland would seem good bets - esp. with respect to the golfing. On the mainland, perhaps somewhere in the south of France, Spain or Portugal. There are several popular holiday resorts which are effectively English outposts, if Grandma and her beau want something fairly comfy, where they can chat easily with the neighbours. You could use their place as a base for explorations further afield, too. But if Grandma's paying, I wouldn't ditch her altogether - scope out some daytrips that you think she will also enjoy that you can do together. It's always fun seeing a place through someone else's eyes, and it's really a great experience for both of you to share. But it sounds like Gran doesn't need you around all the time, let her and her beau have some romance too.

Best bet, ask her what she wants to do - I know of one quiet, retiring, older woman who had always dreamed of Italy, she finally made it there in her 60s and had the time of her life. My aunt (neither quiet or retiring, I grant you), up and took herself to India to celebrate her 60th birthday.

Who knows what adventures lurk in the hearts of grandmas?

This summer, my friends and I are planning on going to Cornwall to stay in a cabin by a lake. They're really lush, this is the website: www.forestholidays.co.uk

It seems there are all kinds of activities, pony riding, sailing, bike riding, walking, etc. It looks really beautiful. Obviously I've not been yet so I can't properly recommend it, but I love the look of it.

On a side note, I came home drunk last night (I managed to refrain from posting in the drunk thread!), and saw there was a thread called "traveling with Grandma" and the title made me laugh so much for some reason!

I think you need to research on internet about that topic and hire a best travel agent who guides very well. What to do or not.......
