Default do i need a backpack? or will suitcase suffice?

hey kids,
i'm doing three weeks across europe in january/february. i'm not sure how much actual backpacking i'll be doing since it's pretty cold and i imagine i'll mostly be sticking to cities and traveling by train. my question is will a medium sized suitcase be sufficient for what i'd like to do? i'd bring a small day pack as well, of course. but do i really need to buy a proper backpack or will my silly rolling suitcase get 'er done? truth me told, i'd rather look like i'm there on business rather than a brave, bold backpacker. :D any advice??

dude take a backpack. it is SO much easier than lugging around a suitcase. moving train to train, through airports, down city streets to your hostel, there is no other choice.

for three weeks i'd say a suitcase is okay

there are tons of suitcase vs backpack discussions on here, but what it boils down to is that with a backpack you dont have to drag it up and down steps, across cobblestones, your hands are free to fiddle with maps and money, things of that nature

if you are okay with doing the above mentioned activities with the suitcase id say go for it...three weeks is the longest id put up with that mofo before i'd throw it off the eiffel tower in frustration lol

Where in Europe will you be going? Somewhere with snow or somewhere without? That can make a difference too. I would definitely not want to lug a suitcase (rolleys or no rolleys) through the snow, but it wouldn't be too bad in a warmer climate.

Does depend on the stair factor too though. I've stayed in many places that are like 6 floors up with no elevator...can be a bit of a pain with a suitcase.

Also, The more travelling you do (like 1-2 days per city vs 4-5) the more you will want a pack. IMO. Although, like Lizz said, 3 weeks is not that long of a time period (and it would probably be my max too...2-3 weeks of travel). You could def manage without the backpack.

the first time you have to run to catch something.
you will wish you had a bad backpack and good shoes.
and that you packed lightly
