Default Costa Rica for a month

Hi all!!!

My first post...

I'm going to Costa Rica alone for the month of August and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

I'm living in NYC and am pretty level headed... Know spanish fairly well and am comfortable traveling by myself. I'm a writer and there are two things I hope to accomplish from this trip:

1. Finish a first draft of a feature screenplay.

2. Go SURFING! And wander the jungle.

I'm just looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and the people that try to leech my time.

With that said... I don't want to travel around too much and prefer to stay in one area...

Any recommendations for good surf in close to proximity to lush jungle? I also wanted to know if I should get an apartment or stay at a hostel because of my length of stay? Any suggestions for apartments? I already checked out Hostelworld.com.

Best

Hey huqleberry!!

I just read your post and I thought it was funny that your doing practically the same thing as me! lol except I live in DC, but used to live in east village.

I'm not sure of any particular places close to Jungle...I mean there has to be somewhere right? Theres this site I have been using though, to find some good surf spots. just google "costa rica surf guide" ....I would post link, but because im a newbie they wont let me ahh bummer!

I'm planning to just buy a surfboard when I am down there..and selling it before I leave.

:D

I read of a hostel called Rocking J's. I don't know if it is near the jungle but it sounds REALLY cool and it is on my list of places to go. $5/night for a hammock! how cool.

The only place in Costa Rica that I visited that had jungle and ocean was Manuel Antonio NP (I stayed in Quepos at the wide-mouth frog hostel for about 7 or 8 dollars a night, and a short bus ride away) although it was a little touristy. I will admit that I don't surf (I would drown in about 5 seconds) so I don't know how good the surf was there, but hey. You'll love central america though, it's an amazing region and I admit I had more fun in Costa Rica than I thought I would (since it's a lot more touristy than the other places I went to).

Here are my pics from the area. so you can get an idea of what I saw!

good luck!

Hehe, pretty much every place I visited in Central America had hammocks to sleep in - gotta love it! Treehouses were a little less common though..

This is SUPER awesome. I am going to CR in December and I just stumbled upon this thread, and now Puerto Viejo is a DEFINITE stop on my itinerary just for this place.

Yeah Rockin' J's is awesome! I didn't stay there, but stayed at a place next door, and it looks pretty impressive. There's a huge treehouse structure in the middle (looks like a pretty big place), and it's definitely the young backpacker spot in town. We planned on staying there all along, but the place next door was just too cute and there were a ton others like it....so don't plan too much! And you won't find a shortage of hammocks to sleep in. It's the cheapest way to go.

For anyone looking for more information on Costa (especially surfing and independent travel) I would recommend reading Allan Weisbecker's Searching for Captain Zero.

Does anyone know a safe, cheap place to stay in Bataan?
