Hey-
I'm wondering if anyone can recommend or warn me to any great/shitty hostels in Amsterdam, Brussles, Luxembourg and Paris. I will be there in late may of 2007 and will be traveling with a buddy who hates the large 20 person dorm style hostels. i've been looking around online and have found a few that look promising but wanted to hear any raves/rants on hostels in these areas.
Thanks,
J

Hey there,
I just made my way though Benelux over the past 3 weeks and here is where I stayed:

Amsterdam:
StayOkay Vondelpark
- It was a bit from from Centraal Station, but close to the museums. Very clean - no real complaints, but I wish I had been closer to the downtown core

Brussels:
2Go4
- Very clean and close to everything, including the north train station, but a bit more expensive than other places. They also say that they have free internet, but it is only one computer that is available from like 8am-2pm, 6pm-10pm (or something like that).

Van Gogh
- Highly recommend. Cheap, fun and friendly. There is an internet cafe right on the corner and all the sights are within fairly short walking distance.

Luxembourg:
- The HI youth hostel is really the only place to stay in Luxembourg city. It was relatively cheap and was a GREAT facility. Practically brand new building. Easily walkable to everything you want to see in the city.

I never got to Paris on my last trip, but I would highly recommend getting out to Ghent and Bruge while you are in Belgium. Especially to the brewery tour in Bruge (and if you are there on a Saturday night you HAVE to ask around and go to "Willy's House"). I stayed in the Bauhaus in Bruge and it is also a MUST.

Hope this helped

From first hand experience I can full recommend The Bull Dog Hostel

Clean, newly reno'd, great local. and the 8 bed dorm doesn't feel like it as the space was large.

Well, I would say walk around those cities and your gonna see signs everywhere for hotels and such. Almost always under the hotel name or somwhere on the sign they will have a number of stars and the lower the stars the cheaper its gonna be. I think a 2-3 star place is around 60 euros a night which will give you a 2 single beds, so thats not bad 30 euros each for your own space, me and my mate hit those some times just to get outta hostels and unwind after a hard days journey. They are acually quite nice and clean dont think cause they are cheap they are gonna be shit......also I think that if you go to Paris or Adam book ahead cause those are 2 of the most popular cities I would say and lots of the time especially on weekends the hostels book out fast leaving you no choice but to go to a cheap hotel

As far as hostels go, I would probably go with Bobs hostel in Amserdamn, its simply the cheapest not the nicest ever but when your in Adam your probably gonna be to trashed to care

Paris.....hmmmm well hostels in Paris I found to be far and few between, so I would say treat yourself a bit here and get a cheap 2-3 star motel for a couple nights, we stayed in a great one called the studia its like 5 minutes if that walk from nortre dame on one of the big main streets there....I think the street was grande parade or something....dont quote me on that though. The hotel is right in front of a underground stop. Good place!

If you're going to be splitting the costs, the Etap hotel chain (www.etaphotels.com) can be pretty reasonable - in Paris we stayed at one that was around 45 euro/night, there are a few in the chain that cost less than that. You could probably get beds at a hostel for less than 20 euro/night in Paris, but if they're booked or skanky, the Etaps are a good backup plan. They're usually on a bus route, and most are within a few minutes' walk of a metro station, so that's pretty handy. Another plus? Bathroom in the room. And a TV. Not much else, but clean and comfy.

Paris,
Hotel du Loiret on rue de Mauvais Garcon

Right in the middle of the Hotel de Ville district, great location, great train line, and SUPER cheap. When I lived in France that was where we stayed all the time when we went to paris.

They dont have a website (yes, that cheap, still stayable).

Info:
Hotel du Loiret
8 rue de Mauvais Garcon
Paris
tel: 01 48 87 77 00

Hope this helps!

*laughs* maybe it's just me, but I would be wary staying anywhere on "Bad Man St."

peace and love hostel in paris was a great time when i was there in july. It was 20 euro a night though which although not cheap i think is a great deal for that city. it has a good bar with decent prices... plus it's 2 minutes from a metro stop so you can get anywhere you want fast.
