Sydney has to be the cheapest. What you might do is buy return Toronto to LAX, and LAX to Sydney. It could take some planning and could be costly if something were to happen with the planes not being on time but... I've noticed that doing this from Indianapolis can save me in excess of 400-500 dollars.

North America to Australia really varies a lot in cost, as you've noticed...if you're flexible on when you go and keep an eye out there can be some pretty good deals though when Quantas is having a sale. (~$1000 USD with taxes and fees included). I'd be surprised if anywhere but Sydney or Melbourne was the cheapest.

I also booked direct from LA when I went there and then booked a separate ticket to get to LA which saved me a lot of money. That might be tricky if you're coming from Toronto because thats another set of international taxes you end up paying but it's worth a try.

The best deal for Australia with stop over in SEA I could find, open jaw, was to Sydney via Kuala Lumpur, with AirMalaysia. Also check with Thai Airline, via Bangkok, my bet is that they'll probably offers the best price from Toronto.

when I flew to toronto (from sydney) I flew air canada via honolulu and vancouver. I believe they have a direct flight to vancouver now so you dont have to go through the us. 2 grand sounds about right though, what did you think you would pay? I didn't mean for that to sound rude but I am so used to always paying at least $2000 to fly anywhere that it's always a pleasant surprise if it's less! you gotta remember australia is pretty damn far away from toronto.

For cheapest in South-East Asia, check Oasis from YVR (Vancouver) to HKG (Hong Kong)...as for Australia, if you can PM me your ideal dates, length of stay, etc...I can see what routings I can find from YOW (Ottawa) or YYZ (Toronto) for the lowest possible price.

CB, I just noticed there are some great web deals right now with Quantas. $1199 canadian from Vancouver with 3 one-way Australia domestic flights (if you depart in August, and your free flights are limited to Brisbane and south down the coast to Adelaide....the main common places this leaves out is Cairns and Uluru/Alice Spings). From Toronto it's +300 canadian. It's always looked cheaper to me to book a separate ticket to the main departure city.

Another one out there is $1500 canadian from toronto, with no domestic flights, but also you can go most anytime this year.

These exclude the taxes and fees though...

Yeah Sydney is usually the cheapest - but you should get a cheap flight out to LAX and then get the roundtrip one from there - will probably save you a couple hundred I think. Just check out the kayak search engine for flights - it brings up the absolute cheapest deals from everywhere. Hope that helps mate and have a great time, you'll love Australia!!

Most North American flights come via Sydney, so usually cheaper to just go there....
