Cheapest way to get from U.S. to Mexico (NO FLYING)
What is the cheapest way to get to Mexico from the U.S.? I don't want to fly because that's expensive and hitch-hiking is NOT on my to-do list.
Is there a bus or train that goes from a city in TX or NM that goes down through Mexico? I'd like to eventually make my way back down to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, or Panama. I figure there are enough buses in Mexico to get me through and to the neighboring countries but what about from United States to MX?

You can take greyhound into Mexico... it goes to several cities in country.
I have heard of corruption amongst officials crossing over into Guatemala on buses, getting charged outlandish immigration fees. I know you can take the ADO line from Cancun or Playa Del Carmen into Belize City, Belize, but not sure the best way to then get from Belize to Guatemala
I test priced a bus trip from San Antonio, Tx to Monterrey, MX and it was $40.

I suppose you can always post a free ad on craigslist.org "rideshare" sections from vall the various major cities in texas and see if you get any bites.
Other than that, the $40 bus trip that Sijuki found sounds pretty darn good .
