Bangkok advice
Hi ,
Sorry for late reply but i am giving some useful information regarding Bangkok.
Traffic in Bangkok is horrendous so take care and there are plenty of good cheap apartments so you can find easily. The main thing to look in Bangkok is for good security and a secure entry system.
There are many tourist destination and i am giving name of some:
1 Grand Palace & Wat Prakeaw
2 Chinatown (Yaowarat)
3 Floating Market
4 Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn)
5 Wat Pho
I think this will help you..

I can't answer all your questions but I can give you a few tips:
Don't whatever you do, drop litter.
If a taxi driver offers to take you to a restaurant, refuse. In fact, be wary about recommendations from any locals.
When you reach the coast, don't hire jetskis.

For anyone who might find this thread, as I'm sure DharmaBum's trip has long-since passed...
Getting into Thailand is really easy. You don't need a visa if you are from one of about 50 countries that includes most of Europe and North America (check before you do).
Bangkok is actually pretty nice. I'd recommend taking a look at the reclining Buddha but I felt like once you'd seen a few temples, you'd seen them all. Definitely see a Muay Thai fight at Lumphini stadium, take a wander round Patpong, get bored and go to Sukhumvit instead. Do some shopping at Pratunam Fashion Mall, visit the Weekend Market and look at the pets, take a riverboat tour...
For me the real beauty of Thailand lied outside BKK, but its still a fun place to be.
As Louise says, be careful when renting jet skis. Inspect them for damage first and don't dick around on them. I know a Chilean guy who was escorted under knifepoint to an ATM and instructed to drain his account after scuffing one in Koh Phang Ngan.
