Hey all... I was dumb enough to get a backpack that doesnt lock completely. Its a Dueter SL 60L and its an amazing bag besides for the top portion which doesnt lock. I didnt know how to describe it, so I included a picture:
The top (the black stuff) is covered with a hood like a normal backpack (as seen at the right of the 1st pic) but it doesnt have any zips for locks. So I thought I could make some holes in the black material and wind a thin (1/3 cm) bicycle cable through it and make like a metal net.
Are there any suggestions? David

I had a similar situation with my pack. I punched in metal eyelits around the top in the fabric portion, then I just use a normal combo lock after pulling together all the eyelits.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a little knife slice undoes all that extra work. I say just always have your bag with you or locked in a locker.

pffftttt unless you are going to some really seedy places I just woudent worry about it. I would only take a bike lock and run it through the little loop thing it has at the top its like a little handle or something and then through my shoulder straps and then lock it to a post, if you have a mate lock them like that together and to a post. I didnt care if someone went through my bag which Im sure happend cause there was nothing but cloathes in there anyways and they could take my cloathes I wouldent care........Me and my mate left our bags locked like that 2 a post on a beach in Spain for 1 week, right in the middle of the beach it was a post for a volleyball net, and we wernt always around we would go to the water park 20 km away for 6 hours and spend the day and I never got anything stolen outta my bag, not on the beach not in hostels no where......just lock your bag down as best you can any would be theif is gonna see your lock and keep moving on for a bag without one casue really if they wanted to take your bag they are gonna all it takes is a little knife and a cut here and there and its free of the lock so its more of a deterent then anything, dont sweat it!!!! I would say the only time I would lock down always was on europe trains
good luck

Thanks for all the replies, the eyelits seem pretty smart. I agree wills, but my real concern is airports. I really dont feel like getting to Paris and all my stuff has been taken at Johannesburg airport. JHB airport is a seriously bad place in terms of crime!
