The other lessons learned is that when you're travelling you should really trust your insticts and gut feelings: about people, places and things. Trust your gut over what other people tell you.

For example, is a local genuinely trying to be your friend or extort you? This is an ok neighbourhood to stay?

Sometimes the line is fine... but I've only gotten in trouble the times that I don't listen to my gut.

Trips (only counting recreational travel):

SECOND TRIP (2007): First Solo Trip! Greece, Turkey, Syria, Spain

2009: Japan & HK, Southern Spain
[size=1]2010: All over Lebanon, Ibiza (Spain), Oktoberfest (Germany), Thailand.
2011: India (Goa), Jordan, Jerusalem, San Sebastian (Spain), Amsterdam (again), London, Driving from Vancouver to L.A. (stopping in Portland, Seattle, San Fran and all the little stops), Montpellier (France), Geneva and Lausanne (Switzerland)

^Totally agree!

I am offically a solo backpacker. After an awful experience with a friend and his cousin I ditched them and found that I truly love backpacking alone. Although im kinda sick of head shots of myself!!

The only time I broke this rule I ended up lost in a park in Budapest with a 65 year old man trying to seduce me. He didn't understand "no" in English, French or German so I was screwed.....figuratively.

I don't think solo backpacking sucked at all - I was hardly ever alone and even found someone to travel with for three weeks, we went all over eastern europe and it was nice because you meet people you know you already share an interest with. Also being solo means you're more open to meet people and people are less intimidated to come up to you. I would HATE to travel as a couple because you're pretty much committing to just that person for the whole trip.

Plus when you're by yourself you get to do what you want to do alllllll the time - you don't have to consider anyone else but yourself, exactly what some people need. I liked that when I woke up I could do whatever I felt like that day - hit the sights early or sleep in a little bit late to try and fight off that hangover - there was no one else pestering me to do what they wanted.

I suggest everyone travel solo once, just to allow yourself the experience of learning exactly what makes you tick.

Both are good-there are times I have travelled with a friend and loved it because it was good company and it can make me feel safer and there have been times I have gone solo and loved it because I was open to new things. It depends really. What I will say is, if you travel with a friend make sure its a good friend because you 2 will be together...a lot.
