Hey guys, I am starting to look at digital cameras for my trip. I want something that has 4+ megapixels and at least 2X. Do you have a camera that you LOVE that I should look at? I started looking and I feel SWAMPED!!
So, what are you recommendations on the subject?

omisan and I both have the Sony DSC-W1 and it rocks house.
And besides that britkettle, I have never steared you wrong!
The Sony DSC-T1 is the small one you see on commercials. It rocks too and is super small for a 5 megapixel camera.

I took a Sony Cyber Shot DSC-P32 with me on my trip last year and it served me relatively well. It was really user friendly. I was a bit disappointed with the limited smart zoom - try to get an optical zoom. This type is outdated now and I wouldn't have a problem getting a better more up to date one of this brand for next trip.

I've got a question guys:
When you are on a long trip (let's say to Europe), what do you do with your pictures? Do you take enough memory, or upload them to a website? If so, what web site?

I found the best method was to burn onto a CD at either the photoshop or the internet cafe. This would cost about 4-10 euros depending where you were. Some internet cafes you could do it yourself and so would only pay for the time used accessing the internet (so slightly cheaper).
I think uploading to a website would be much more time consuming and expensive than burning. Always get the person working there to show you on the computer that the pics have been successfully burnt onto CD before you delete from the memory stick.
I carried 128 and 16 bit cards and would be burning approximately every three weeks. There is the problem of carrying the CD's. I made sure they were well protected. I didnt send then home in the mail for fear of them not arriving.

I have a 2.0 megapixel camera, nothing amazing, and I got a 512MB card on ebay for like $40.00, now the thing holds over 750 pictures. It all depends on what you want to spend in order to not have to waste time dealing with the pics until you get back.

1. I LOVE the Canon cameras that I've owned but I don't think you'd go wrong with Omisan's or Jake's suggestion of the Sony.
2. I carried 2 256mb and 1 128 mb cards around with me; I dumped the images to CD at various internet cafes. It's much quicker than uploading hundreds of images to a website-- yeesh.
3. Whatever you decide to do-- GET IN THE HABIT OF USING YOUR WRIST STRAP!!! Seriously! Every single time I pull out my camera it's automatic for me to put the wrist strap on, and THANK GOD I got in that habit because otherwise I would have been a very, very sad Space Virgin many times over.
4. When you get back, make sure you upload your pics to a photo hosting site like photobucket to share with all of us!

1. I have an Olympus Camedia D-580. It's a 4 megapixel camera that will also take Quicktime VIDEO with AUDIO. I was suprised at the qualiy of the video. It takes excellent pictures with many nice features. It can also do very high resolution for those really nice scenes/shots. It's also small and has a retracable lens that is nice for backpackers (it is well protected).
2. I swear by Olympus as all 3 of my past cameras have been from them. A 256mb card will hold 563 pictures on the 2288x1712 resolution. (which is the highest). Double that for a 512 card. I have found it to be a really nice camera overall and I paid 330 for it. It has come down since. You can pick up a memory card reader for it for aaround $20 USD. I found uit on Froogle for $163.00 at http://www.usaphotonation.com .
3. This thing does tend to use batteries somewhat fast. I buy the Duracell Ultra's and they seem to last longer. So, as with most any other camera these days, make sure you have plenty of batteries and memory for the trip.
Side note: No matter what camera you have, I suggest you get a copy of Picasa by Google (free). It allows you to sort your pictures very easily, remove red eye, and even "enhance" the image so that it looks a lot better. Did a miracle on all of my old film camera pics. It will also dump your photo albums to a webpage that you can add to your personal site. See mine by clicking "WWW" below this post. I did it all with picasa and the "Webmaster" pics are from a film camera.
Hope this helps,
foofiter

Well, there's now a sub-$100 5-mpx camera available, but as you should all remember from the cheapie PC craze of the mid-90's, you get what you pay for.

Speaking of photo editors, does anyone have the full file set to Microsoft Photo Editor? I like it cuz it's extremely easy to use yet still has a variety of effects. One I like is how you can rotate the pic by any amount of degrees.
However, I've only been able to copy the main file from work and it is now missing all the effects and rotation capabilities. I think I'm missing some .dll files or something - but don't know what they are so I can search for them. Anybody have a clue, here?

Voyd get your hands on Macromedia Fireworks. It is the best photo editing program I have used. I like it even better than Photoshop...

i've been looking around and the new canon canon a510 seems to be a great camera except for the bulk. has anyone used this camera? is the slight size difference that annoying?
