Default the market

So what is everyone doing with their financials? Your 401k, your stocks, your money you are saving for retirement.

It seems that with the market in turmoil so many people (professionals) have no clue what to recommend or recommend terrible ideas.

"take your money out of stocks and put it in cash" some say, so you have no chance of recapturing what you had?

"invest in these stocks that haven't faced declines", that in this market have limited chance of increasing in value and may face declines just because the overall market has.

I took my money in my 401k that was left over, (I only lost 28% last year), and invested it in personal stock choices. My choices were AIG (American Insurance Group), BAC (Bank of America), F (Ford Motor), MGM (MGM Mirage Casinos) and O (Realty Income Corp).

My BAC, F, and MGM I am up on. The O, while strong on paper has felt the wrath of the market overall but pays a strong dividend, monthly. My AIG I am down on still, bought it a little too high.

I pick companies whose stocks are at record lows but remain strong in their market and have a very distinct chance of surviving this downturn and will rebound to numbers similar to those seen in 2005-2008.

I also have money in LVS (Las Vegas Sands), WYNN (Wynn Resorts), BGP (Borders Group (up 330% so far)), AAPL (Apple Inc)

Just thought I would throw out some good news for the stock markets. I have managed to regain everything I lost last year and then some so far.

Any other investors out there?

My boss at the golf course is investing his money in "green" companies, cos he thinks that's where the money is going to be next. I dunno much about it though.

I took what I had put away in my last companys 401k, dumped the default mutual fund that it was in, got in and out of Goog (made a small return in a few weeks), then dumped the proceeds into NFLX. Up about 15% on that since I bought it a few weeks ago.

I'll ride the momentum and will only sell it if it goes down past the trend line on high trading volume.

I can always get back in...

Anyone else investing?

I have shares in mainly nz companies, a few overseas, have done since I got my first job, put $60 away every week towards it so i've never missed it, but my dad is into shares and investing so he does the choosing of shares etc, have kept them through the 'recession' and purchased a whole lot more during this time, since I don't need to funds we always reinvest dividends if theres this option or get our cheque and bank it into our 'share' a/c which all gets put into more shares.

I'm planning on keeping that going unless i really really need the money and it may one day way down the track be a house deposit, its kind of nice knowing its there if i really need money.

I've also just started putting $25 a week into a seperate a/c at a seperate bank so I don't see it and after a couple of years will decide what to do with it, maybe an emergency fund.

We also have kiwisaver here which takes 2-4% (you choose) of your before tax salary and invest it with a 'fund manager' kind of - your employer has to match your contributions up to 2% of your pay, this can also be taken out if you have to file bankruptcy, want to pay off some of your mortgage or put towards your first home, or if you permanently move to another country - otherwise it gets paid out as a lump sum when you reach retirement age.

I don't understand US Tax at all, is the 401k thing kind of like kiwisaver?

That is awesome, Amanda! Great job on planning for retirement. The long and steady road will reap great rewards!

401k is the main corporate retirement plan, like your kiwisaver. Many companies will match, but some don't. It's pretax dollars, so if you keep the money in there until are 59 1/2, you won't get taxed on it. Like your kiwisaver, the only way to pull it out without paying it back before retirement, are in cases of "hardship." You can take out loans from it and pay it back weekly through your paycheck deductions. You will pay it back with interest, but all the interest goes to you anyways since it's a loan you took out from yourself in the first place.

What kind of companies is your dad investing into these days?

Ahhh yes I thought that was what it was, but wasn't 100% sure. I know for sure we have quiet a few in GPG - I believe it’s a British Cy, & also a number in Auckland International Airport, Fisher & Paykel Fridges & Healthcare, & a couple of smaller 'funds management' type places that invest funds all around the world, the reasoning behind this is that your investing in a number of cys in a number of world markets which reduces the risk of the whole fund falling apart, if 1 share goes down another may go up and balance it out.

I wish I understood a single word of what you guys are saying.

I'm just tryna get my ass to the other side of the pond so I at least don't have to worry about healthcare! :P I'm too (admittedly) naive to think about retirement and investing right now, though sometimes I wish I understood what was going on so I could get in on the action.

It's definitely a learning process that never ends...

I recommended an easy peasy to read book that would help you get started on the right mental track.

Better to start sooner than later!

Netflix (NFLX).

I've been riding this stock for the last 8 weeks and am now up 35% in 2 months.

It is on fire. And with the new ipad, the Netflix app was the top non-apple app downloaded. People want to watch streaming movies on their gadgets these days. Also in the works for Netflix are apps for the iphone and itouch.

If Netflix starts to gown down (on high trading volume), I'll get out and come back in when it starts heading back up.

For now, I think the momentum is still strongly in it's favor.

I do my best to avoid the banking system, I want to contribute as little as possible to it.

I just sold all my NFLX stocks as it dropped $16 a share today after announcing great earnings, but not good enough for institutions who were expecting to blow away the estimates.

The trading volume was about 400% it's normal trading volume and coupled with the price drop, it's my cue to exit.

In total, I made 60% on my money in 4-5 months with this stock and at one point it actually more than doubled the price that I got in at.

I may get back into the stock after it stabilizes and starts another upward trend.

Meanwhile, looking for another winner. Any suggestions on charts to study?

I thought I had a winner with WND.V as I got in on its upswing. Thankfully I sold after it hit a plateau and before it's drop. Because of how small fry I was playing, I only broke even on the deal. Shortly after I pulled my money from scottrade and stopped playing. If something good came along though I think I would hop back in.

You're lucky you broke even on a penny stock. Most people lose on them. I definitely learned my lesson on penny stocks years ago.

I have learned to always go where the big boys (mutual funds and institutions) are putting their money because they are the ones that drive the stock prices up (or down).

For now, I'll monitor the market until I see another breakout in a good industry.

I've been in Caterpillar (CAT), Great Northern Iron Ore (GNI) lately.

I am focusing on companies that are solid and good in their segments. Basic Materials, Manufacturing, Real Estate, and strong Tech companies. Although now is the time to find the next 'big' company that will make huge growth in the years to come.

Still in Realty Income (O), Home Properties (HME), and Camden Properties (CPT), and Main Street Investments (MAIN), which all pay decent dividends.

My three 'experimental' stocks are Tesla Moters (TSLA) and Frontier Communications (FTR), and Santa Fe Gold (SFEG)
