Hola, mis amigos!

Me and my friends are planning to go backpacking in Latin America in November and December, and one of our spots is Pelenque. Now the problem bothers us is that we would like to go to Palenque from Mexico City by bus, but don't want to go via San Cristóbal de las Casas as a hub since we are informed that the security problem is a major concern there. However, we havn't found any bus company providing the kind of route from Mex. City to Palenque without going through San Cristóbal de las Ca.

Any advice is highly appreciated! Muchas Gracias!

Benson

That's one hell of a long bus trip!! The way to Palenque is very mountainous so there aren't many roads. If you're coming from the west i think you have to go through San Cristobel as it's the only road. However, there was absolutley no security problems when i was in San Cristobel, it was actaully one of the safer places in Mexico that i went to, so unless something big has happened there recently i don't think you have anything to worry about.

Where did you hear of security problems? I've never had any troubles with buses in Mexico. That said, I haven't been that far south in Mexico on public transport.

It's just that for everyplace you find that you'd like to go, you could probably find some "source" that gives you reasons NOT to go. You have to make your decisions...and the rationalization I usually take is this:
If I DON'T go, I will probably be risking my life even more by simply driving on our nation's highways.

My Dad spends a lot of time in San Cristobal and is American. In fact, he is visiting me now in the States and just came through there via bus a few days back (he came from Guatemala and was heading to Mexico City to catch a flight to the States). He loves San Cristobal, generally stays there a few nights on route and has some awesome pictures, it looks like a beautiful old mexican town. He has never run into any problems there and he thinks all the hub bub is way overblown. BTW - he spends a lot of time in Guatemala and has more issues there, by far. I would say no worries on San Cristobal and enjoy the town!!
