alright, I am spending most of the winter and spring in london, and my mother is really concerned that the weather will be too much and I'll be sick the whole time. So, anyone have the dirt? I don't really think it will be an issue, but I thought I'd ask a bit anyway.

I moved from New Orleans to Exeter (southwest England) a few months ago, and the weather does take a bit of getting used to. I think I've been sniffly the whole time! It's very damp and can get cold - but if you just dress warmly (scarf, gloves, hat, the whole nine), you should be fine.

I base my opinion of British weather on all the movies that talk badly about it.

It is -28C with ice fog this morning here. I doubt the UK can be any worse than that.

I'm not the best person to talk about cold weather...The first time I went to a cold place I got sick cause I went to the supermarket, got lost and it was raining and snowing...Never felt so cold before! So listen to your mom and take care!

Kerist! That's -18F! I still remember freezin' my @ss off in Berlin when the wind was cuttin' thru like knives!

So, definitely at least invest in a fleece hoody (jumper). Pricey - but WELL-WORTH it.

well, steph-- tell your mom that you won't get sick because of the weather, you'll get sick because of viruses... although I doubt that will make her feel much better. Just wear warm clothes and prepare for wet.

I tell you what.. the average temp in London for January (the coldest of the months) is between 34ºF and 40ºF, with about 2 inches of rain. While it will be moderately crappy, its not quite like the northern highlands or anything. It shouldn't be too bad. Just crappy and depressing. A good sweater or hoodie and a coat ought to be sufficient.

If you get cold legs, sure thermal underwear could be used, but it might get warm when you are indoors.

Thanks guys! I have several nice lovely long coats and even though its worthless here, I do have the "whole nine" in great abundance.

As for thermals, I figure I'll be spending at least part of my time while I'm away outside in the cold, so I have some of silk. They're so nice and warm..

Anyway, mother gave up on worrying about the weather. Now she has this very irrational fear that I'll fall madly in love with some strange european and marry him after three days. I shit you not.

It amazes me that your mother has such concern about you running away with some guy after three days.... what would cause such worries? Just don't marry an American, everyone hates them

My mother is worried I'm going to get pregnant while I'm here. I think marriage isn't a concern because she knows I don't see it as something for me ever. I met another Canadian here whose mom thinks the same thing as yours though. They have to worry about something I guess.

And, I'm in the UK midlands and the weather isn't half as wet or cold as everyone was trying to prepare me for.

I'd be offended too if I were you and my mother though I'd get pregnant while abroad, Jake.

Oh my, mothers worry about the weirdest things! However, in my case my mother was right, I met a guy and three weeks later were living together, and now we are thinking of settling down in Nova Scotia or Halifax after the visas are up. So you just never know!
