This is apparently a really popular hostel in Riga, won loads of awards on Hostelworld for getting good ratings... although someone did mention to us in vilnius how they thought the ratings were fixed...not sure how. Having said that, my friend rated it, and within a couple of hours had a reply from frank asking why she had rated it so badly...not sure if they can somehow discredit bad ratings they receive or something.
We met quite a few people who stayed there and while some people thought it was ok,most people we spoke to hated it...we hated it too!
The only decent thing was the free beer you get on arrival. Which is kind of good for a beer that costs over €2 in the hostel bar (you could buy a bottle of beer in England for that price in some bars).
We were there at the weekend, which really isnt the time to go, unless you want to be up all night partying with all the drunks that come over from the UK for stag parties. Which isnt what we were looking for, so we had to put up with people coming in our room all night shouting and screaming (the lock on the room door didnt work). its right on the main road too, so even once the hostel is quiet, youve still got the traffic to keep you awake
They do give you a great map when you get there though, showing you exactly where the irish pubs, english pub, clubs and strip clubs are...that came in really useful
it had a really strange atmosphere too, not a good place to meet people in. Plus the place was full of guys. apart from my friend, there was only 1 other girl staying there while we were there. the staff werent that great either, not really much use helping with normal questions about Riga, touristy things, not just how to get to the nearest strip club.
It just seemed to be targetting stag parties, who would not really notice that they are getting ripped off in the hostel bar, and be really grateful of the map to find the strip clubs.
Not particularly friendly, and certainly not fun.
