^Chalk doesn't actually protect your hands from getting torn up...it just dries them out when you sweat (so you get a better grip)....
If you're climbing outdoors for the first time, you're going to need experience in how to properly tie knots and set up a route before you go out...PLEASE don't try rock climbing without this! If climbing outdoors though where someone else sets up (who is properly trained and likely has all the gear to set up) you will only need harness, shoes, helmet and chalk bag/chalk (optional) for yourself
If you're climbing indoors you don't need a rope. they should have one at the gym you're going to. All you need is shoes, harness, chalk and chalk bag (optional, but makes a huge difference)
