Hi Folks,
I'm sure this question has been asked a hundred times before, but here goes ..........
Should I buy a backpack or a suitcase (a suitcase on wheels, that is) ?
(I'm heading to Oz in January and I don't plan on going camping or spending long periods walking, etc).
Actually, are backpacks on wheels available ?

IrishDude, Love the new avatar...
This issue has been asked a few times and I am standing by what I have said in the past,I will actually quote it for you...
Quote:
Packs are great for people who are moving around alot, people who may not have a bed to sleep in, who spend alot of time walking between locations, who need to be mobile in a moments notice, who don't mind wrinkles in thier clothes, who might be caught in nature, who need to carry absolutly everything with them ( even food).
SuitCases I think are for people who are going to get comfortable in one place for a bit, who have thier own room in a hotel, who have no chance of being on the street or in nature over night, who are set in stone where the are staying and where they are going, people who prefer to have cloths a little less wrinkled...

Always great to bring up a popular issue my friend!!

Ops.........forgot about the second part of my question
Will I be at a distinct disadvantage by not knowing how to swim , when in group situations/tours ?
(I'd imagine that 99% of travellers know how to swim).
Thanks for the feedback CanadianDude - good answer re backpack vs suitcase !
(BTW, The avatar is the squadron badge used by the Irish Air Corps (i.e. air force) aerobatic display team).

Na, i don't think so, some people swim, some do not, not that big a deal...People on the tour might razz ya bit about it, but find something that you do well to take away from the fact you can not swim.
What tour are you going on?? Will you trip be all tour, or is some time on your own??? Alot of tour groups will not let you bring a backpack with a metal fram ( internal or external) , check with them before you go, you might not have the option of bringing a backpack.

I haven't signed up to any particular tour as yet - might do along the way.
I'm heading to Oz on my own and hope to join in with others along the way. At this point I'm planning to stay in Sydney for c.1 month and then take off up the east coast - to the north - then to the west (via Ayers Rock).
That's the plan anyway - could all change when I arrive there :D
Have you been to Oz or NZ, Canadian Dude ?
Any tips/special places worth seeing ?
Cheers,
IrishDude.
