Took these last Saturday when snowboarding at a local ski area called Crystal Mountain. We lucked out with unbelievable weather! After an elevation gain of almost 3000 feet on two chair lifts, this was the view:
Even better on close-up:
I wasn't quite ready to hit this (it's a double black) but MAN does it look like fun!

Gorgeous picture Jeanie!! It almost makes me homesick for the snow!
If I ever tried snowboarding, I would have to wear so much gear to protect myself from injuries!! Bit of a klutz I am....

What's this Summer 2007 crap? Bollocks. Fall 2006, baby.
Seriously though, that day we chatted for about an hour with this super cool dude and his daughter. He's summited Rainier about 4 times and done all sorts of other cool climbs throughout the world including the bitchin' Aguille de Midi near Chamonix. I asked him about training and he said screw the training, you'll just make yourself tired... His advice was to do a bunch of good hikes, make sure you're in reasonably good shape and go with a good guide.

So, you can climb Rainer without all the spikes, pitons, and rope shit? I'd be up for that! If it involves all the other kind of gear and stuff, and hanging or rapelling...count me out! I'm not an "adrenaline junkie," but a "wow, what an awesome view" junkie...!

I'm with Briley on that one! I'm more of a "Look at the view" from the bottom. Not a huge fan of heights anyhow. But, the photos are beautiful! Wouldn't mind having that view (sans snow, see enough of that) on a regular basis!

1. I do have that view-- well, something mostly like it anyway-- on a daily basis.
2. Yeah, sorry Mike, climbing that sucker does involve all the gear you mentioned plus more if I'm not mistaken. Ice axes and crampons at the very least.

I no sooner want to have to carry crampons than tampons...

Gotta love Mt. Rainier. For a really, really awesome view of the mountain, cross-country ski or snowshoe up to High Hut--part of the Mt. Tahoma Trails network, just outside the Elbe entrance to the park. You can stay there, too, if you can finangle the reservations. It's worth it just for the view though Wish I'd taken pictures but as usual, upon seeing the view I forgot all about my camera.

damn, that mountain looks huge. i wonder how long it takes to climb? looks like it would be a sweet ski tour, if you had the balls to pack some skis up there.

That mountain is on my to-do list. I've done lots of hikes here in BC ranging from 2hours to 3days. But I don't have good winter hiking or ice climbing gear, they are bloody expensive One of my favorites is Mt. Marriott... it's gorgeous and totally worth the 2.5 drive and the 5hr hike to get to base camp, and from there u can spend days on different routs; there's no trails from the camp so u can go wherever you want as long as u know how to get back (that's very important... I learned the hard way )
