The radio and TV is buzzing with talk of the new Lonely planet guide. While the big citys got good reviews some small towns and resorts got flammed for being tacky.

The book critises (alegedly, I haven't read the thing) some Irish development for ruining the natural beauty.

Some small towns trying to develope themselfs are very upset that people are being told to aviod their twee towns in favour of the cosmopolition citys where lattes poor like water from the sky and tourists walk on a bed of roses compared to the muck encrusted pubs plonked alongside a dirt track in the middle of a field.

The books right about some developments in senic areas though.

That's why I stay around from the major guidebooks. Never include the local charms. tsk tsk.

Do those exist in Ireland?? Jake and I tried so hard to find "dives" in the small towns and never could. I loved the small towns of Ireland!

Their around alright usually at a cross road and are a pub, shop and funneral home all in one. Their not in any town and are completely off the beaten track so very hard to come by these days.

I'd say once the old ones a dead that Ireland will disapear forever, unless I get my way there's a pub in town that hasn't changed for decades they still have the old till (not in use the new ones just sat beside it) and a bit of wood with lounge sloppely pianted on it over the door. I want to buy it and keep the front as a museam peice and develop the back of it then.

Seriously we need to develop tpunk travel guides. I've not found any on the market that were quite good enough. And surely none better than hitting the boards here and gathering info.

oh ireland... I'm thinking of going next year. Cant wait...

I use Rough Guides preferably, but used Lonely Planet here and there...

No guide book is EVER going to be all-inclusive.

Rough Guides are the best ones I've found so far. Short of tpunk and badgering my friends.
It doesnt have to be all inclusive, it just doesnt need to suck. Anyway, a Tpunk guidebook would be amazing. Not just stats and prices and places to stay but short anecdotes, little snips of history and stories from people who've been there.... Once Tpunk is to that level Im so there helping to write...

I actually agree with the book, allot of towns in Ireland are pure shitholes my own included. It's all right for the tourists, ye don't have to live here there's no amenitys, no social scene (other than getting rotten drunk).. Walks. You can go for walks, look at trees.. Lets see what else? No, that's about it really.

You can't walk throught the country side as farmers won't let you on their land because of insurance You can't fish because the government thinks stopping a few fishermen is going to solve the problems caused by all the dumping they allow. You can't piss sideways without the government giving you grief.

Fair enough we have to presearve this beautiful country but the government is going the wrong way about it completely there's still allot of backhanders that see rich people make fortunes while a person who's family has lived in a certain area for generations can't build a house. Or is given all sorts of stupid conditions like the roof has to be this shape the headges can't grow berrys and the chimmey has to be on the south side of the house.

I agree, there's plenty of stuff that the guidebooks neglect, or have completely wrong, in my opinion.

By the same token, (used lonely planet for Baja), certain things are still invaluable, like off the beaten path sights, details about visas, atm's, borders, gas stations, etc. I still rely on it for planning, and make my own notes to share here on Tpunk for the rest...
