For all you non-partying types who are planning on visiting Rome, I seriously recommend checking out the Beehive Hostel. It's run by an American couple who have done an amazing job of maintaining a clean, friendly and just plain CUTE place to stay! I had such a good time there last winter when we went. It was BY FAR the best hostel that we stayed at during our 2 week trip.
From what I remember, it's relatively cheap (less than $20 USD per night)... but they don't include breakfast. I wouldn't be too concerned about that however, because there are a bunch of bakeries nearby and the comfort and cleanliness of the hostel is well-worth a lost breakfast.
Two other things that were worth noting: the beds in the dorm rooms have down comforters on them (which fortunately do not smell like body odor, like some of the other hostels we visited) AND, for the ladies-- hairdryers!!

Sweet Play by Play on the Beehive Hostel in Rome...I tell ya, its great to heat when people have good things to say about a place they have stayed, it really helps other trav'las when they end up in the same place as you were!
If ya have anymore to mention, good or bad, please, we want to know!!!
And a BIG to the boards!!!!!

Thanks Canadian Dude--
I'm glad I could help! I know that before we left last year I searched the internet looking for hostel recommendations-- but couldn't find much. We ended up choosing places based on their own websites (which was a bad move in a couple cases).
I suppose i could go to the other message board and rip into a few of the bad ones! that might be fun. as one of my friends so aptly put it: "If it looks like they're re-painting their bathroom every month instead of cleaning it, you have a problem."

We really appreciate you taking the time to post a review!
I love partying, but need a quiet place to retire each night
