I'm a collegiate athlete and I'm supposed to be training year-round, with a couple 2+ weeks of "off-time" where I don't do anything. I'm a runner...so just wondering if it is a good idea to be running while in Europe. I guess I'd be able to see more of the city/countryside which would be awesome, but what would the locals think and would it be safe? I have never been to Europe, but each summer have been yearning and come very close, this summer seems to be the one (the first hopefully). Or the other possibility would be to travel during my "off-time" or just not run over there .

Yeah my roomie in brasil, not europe i know, went running every day. He met a ton of people doing it.

I've seen plenty of people running in Europe - probably even more so than in California, and we have a helluvalot of runners here. In fact, in both Paris and London I'd see huge GROUPS of people running along the Thames or the Seine or through Hyde Park, with individual runners just joining in on the groups - seems to be some sort of social outlet there!

Yup. ^ What they said. Believe or not, but Europeans do exercise too. My brother went running through my inlaws neighborhood which was nicely set on a huge bluff/small mountain. He had a great time battling the hills.

Thanks guys.
But is it worth it filling my pack with another pair of shoes (hopefully only one pair) and then at least a pair of running shorts. And shirts for running, are they necessary? I could see it being looked down on running around shirtless in some places.

i think it would be a good idea to pack another pair of shoes..theyll get a sweaty and stink, you could probly have them hangin from ya pack aswell..
as for the shirt just take a sleeveless shirt it wont take up much room...

I have a pair of light trailrunners that are excellent both for running and for hiking - both in the jungles and urban... That seems to do the trick. If I'm going for wet/hiking/athletic, then I opt for a pair of Keens that cover all the bases. If you're looking to keep your packing list down, there are all sorts of multi-purpose shoes out there that will be adequate for each activity - some of them are just hideously ugly (read: Keen)

I think its worth doing if its something important to you. There are no rules about these things. You just have to do what makes sense to you.

I ran and biked all the time while I was living in England... and my friends were like "what the heck.. take the bus" however while I was biking I ended up meeting a whole other community of people who biked and did active stuff.. (they were very hot guys too)

helped me keep some of the Heathrow Injection off... (I ate a lot of fatty foods while I was there )

Also, do some google searches for running clubs in those cities. You never know, you might find a group that does a scheduled weekly run while you're there. It would be a nice way to meet some locals....

That said, I usually do enough hiking and traipsing about the city/countryside all day long, that I don't NEED to run.

I'd say take a thin undershirt (like hanes or something) with you. It won't take up much packing room and it you end up having to throw it out because its all sweaty it won't be that big of a deal.

I always brought my running shoes, a pair of easily washable shorts and shirt. Some of my best runs have been while packing in Europe... you should see the Germans... you would be surprised from a country with such a huge love affair with beer and heavy foods.
