I mean specific cities. If you were to plan a round the world trip visiting THE best backpacker destinations which places would be on your list?

In no particular order:
Amsterdam.
Macchu Pichu
Ankgor Wat
Bangkok
Sydney
Costa Rican rainforest
Egypt
Mayan ruins of Mexico
Italy (this is where I narrow it down to Rome, Cinque Terre, Naples-Sorrento-Amalfi coast, Tuscany)
Greek Islands
Its too hard to make specific destinations on some- I could spend a month in Italy and Greece alone. And SE Asia is a LONG way off for this poor chef. But in 2 weeks I'll let you know how the rain forest is doing

Hmmm.. let's see. Starting from San Francisco, I'd head up to Whistler in Canada, where I just got back from, because it's one huge backpacker party over there. Then I'd probably make my way east to London to party with more backpackers. If I haven't gone broke by then, I'd make my way to the much cheaper surrounds of Prague, hopefully before EU membership makes stuff more expensive, then down to Cinque Terre in Italy because everyone and their mother says it has to be done. From there I'd hop over to Barcelona, because it's one of my absolute favorite place that I've been, then I'd make my way across the Mediterranean to Marrakesh for my first foray into Africa. Of course, Africa has distinictly different zones, so maybe a trip down to Dakar would be in order, just to check out the sub-Saharan action, and then jetting on down to Cape Town in South Africa for another little twist - and maybe some crazy 240m bungee jumping. Then it'd be off to Goa, India, where I'd hang out with and make fun of all the technohippies listening to psytrance on the beach. Bangkok would likely be the next destination, then back to the expensive world of Sydney so I can sit around and talk about how cheap everything was in Thailand. I'd stay in the southern hemisphere by making making my way to Buenos Aires, releieved not to be paying Aussie prices anymore, and indulging in $.50 beers and $2 steaks, all before heading northward to Macchu Pichu, making a stop in Iguazu along the way. From there, I'd trek north through Central America, making sure I take a very relaxing stop in Monteverde, Costa Rica, before winding my way back home to San Fran. By the end of the trip, I'll have a massively inflamed liver, a zillion memories, and venereal disease collected from backpackers the world over.

Ummmm, from my experience (in no particular order):
Barcelona, Spain
Rome, Italy
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Innsbruck, Austria
Caye Caulker, Belize
Rio, Brazil
Cusco (machu Picchu), Peru
San Pedro, Guatamala
Puerto Escondido, Mexico
Darwin, Australia
There's sooooooo many others i could write down, but those are probably my top 10 favorite places.
