im having a dilemma. I was so set on getting a tape casette player to take ackpacking, as i thought if my casette breaks i have the tapes, theyre bigger cheaper and more robust and resilient and promptly bought a £5 walkman . Cue tesco, £19.99 an80 meg mp3 player. I kno its not much but my music taster is narrow, thing is i was scared to get an mp3 player cos its more expensive and if it breaks all your songs are gone! what should i do, tape or mp3?

I think most people here will agree that MP3 players are the way to go. There's no switching tapes or hauling a bunch around, you don't have to fastforward or rewind to get to a different song. Everything is compact and on your player. Also, the basic small sized ones are very sturdy. I am the queen of breaking electronics and I've had mine for over a year. Also, even with your music taste being narrow, when you're on a plane, train, bus or whatever, after awhile, you get sick of listening to the same thing over and over. You can squeeze a few songs on there you don't normally listen to that can make the world of a difference. Plus 19.99 pounds really isn't bad.

mp3's are extremely handy, tapes unfortunatly are a dying technology. It may not even be that easy to find a new tape player if yours breaks. they are better on batteries too.

I disagree. After putting all the figures into my abacus, then weighing out the pros and cons with ink poured on to dried sheets of papyrus, I've determined that the tape player is the way to go. An 8-track would be even better. Modern technology is for losers. Ah, I'd better go. The sundial says it's almost time for lunch.
