Hey everyone,

Well, I've just booked my ticket to Sydney, leaving mid January. Planning to work and travel around Australia for just over 6 months. Been thinking about this trip for a while now, but now that its booked I am getting more excited by the minute! Counting down the days 'til I get on the plane and get out of here! Ready for some fun and adventure! This is the first time I am travelling alone, so any advice or suggestions would be welcome. For starters...any reccomendations on which hostel I should stay in in Sydney when I first arrive?

Thanks!

Jess

Hey Jess! You sound just like me! I'm leaving for Australia (also flying into Sydney) on the 1st of January (won't get there til the 5th). I'm going with 2 girlfriends, but don't plan on staying with them for a very long time. I'm planning on going for about 5 or 6 months and am also going to NZ. We should meet up somewhere along the way. Where are you from? I've booked my hostels for the first 11 or so days in Sydney already. We are staying at Wake up! central Sydney and the Billabong Gardens. Not sure what they will be like but from what I've read, they sound like good places to be.

Welcome to the boards - your trip sounds awesome. Hate to break it to you, but it's not quite November yet. Haha. Hope you have a blast. You can look up and book hostesl through the Travelpunk site. Great hostel engine and that's what most of the people around here use.

I'm headed there in just over a week and have booked my first week in Sydney at the Pink House - seems to be a little offbeat and less cattle-drive than all the megahostels that seem to be around Oz... As much as I like the party scene at huge places, I do just fine in the smaller, homier ones - I can find a party just about anywhere anyhow

Hey guys,

Thanks for the welcome! I know it isn't quite January yet...just wishful thinking!
I'm sure the time will fly though 'cause I'm working two jobs and I have grad school applications to think about...only problem is that planning my trip is much more fun than writing my applications....ahh, procrastination.

Scabbybones, I'm from Canada...in Ontario right now but grew up near Montreal. Furthest I've travelled before now is the Caribbean so this'll be a big change!

Welcome!!! you're going to have a great time in Australia. no one ever says they didn't love it.

I'm leaving for Australia and New Zealand at the end of May next year. I'll be there for a year. can't wait!

Just look at it this way; January is sooner than May.

Hello and welcome!

I'll be there from mid-December to 7 January.

I have heard a lot of good things about Wake Up in Sydney.

I don't plan on staying in hostels though b/c I have friends there. The thought has crossed my mind to maybe stay in one for a night because my friends can't totally give up their day job to hang out with me, in which case it would be cool to meet others, but we'll see. (Not if they'll do that, but you know what I mean!)

Yeah it seems like a whole bunch are going to Oz soon...

At work right now, and kinda bored...just one of those days. Seems all I do these days is work (2 jobs) and sleep - gotta save up $$$! Last night I was talking to my cousin about her trip to Oz a few years ago, looking at pics, getting suggestions, etc, etc....making me more and more excited! She says that there is no way I should go out to Australia and not also go to NZ...anyone else got an opinion on that matter? Thanks!
