there should be something that we can do for the earthquake in asia, or the mudslide in quatemalia, we can't be this hopeless.

We all love to travel, so what can we do to help these countries??

All these natural disasters keep happening more offen and on such big scales, what is going on with the world??

I was thinking more along the lines of either going to these places to help out or having benifits in our areas to raise money?, i don't know if these ideas hold any weight.

When i read about these things i feel so hopeless, i want to be able to do something to help these poor people but i don't know what

Start learning to live more in tune with Earth and its natural cycles. We can all conserve more, pollute less, and be prepared for more coming natural and manmade disasters - and elect indy progressive politicians focused on these impending dangers to global security - rather than emotional smokescreens like gay marriage. One guy in Hawaii said it hailed in the latest storm there - which has never happened in his recollection! The polar caps are melting and I think we've only seen the tip of the iceberg here.

I remember when people used to openly scoff at any "nutty endtime prophecies" 7-10 years ago like Noah's Ark. Now, the reaction is more . But, too little too late... Our mass populace has been too seduced by pop culture, emotional political-religious rhetoric and instant gratification to care about REAL issues of true importance to our global future - until they come to the forefront and it becomes crisis mismanagement at best. Look at how many idiots recently bought gas-guzzling Humvee's in "patriotic support" of the Iraq War (no offense, anyone)! People just don't get it. They are just not living in REALITY but their own comfy self-absorbed Matrix of denial.

As bad as the US was shook from 9/11's bodycount of ~2752 and Katrina's bodycount of ~1000, I shudder to think how we will handle a cataclysm on the magnitude of this Pakistani earthquake (40,000+) or the Asian tsunami (1/4 million+)...

If Katrina taught anyone anything, it's that in the end YOU must rely on YOURSELF to take care of YOURSELF. Friends and family may get separated in times of chaos - and the gov/charities will likely be a last resort and slowest in getting there. Also, in a really huge disaster, the gov may not alert the public in fear of exacerbating the situation by causing mass panic.

Everyone needs to start thinking about some survivalism. We need public education on the best ways to prepare for and survive earthquakes, purify water, what to do in chaotic police states, nuclear releases, etc etc - instead of just fearing and panicking in sudden crises (Katrina). Every city should have the highest risks assessed for their unique location/identity and their populace specifically educated on how to handle such potential events. As well as the city's facilities being specially-prepared as well.

I mean, if the US can spend over $200 BILLION already fighting for WMDs, democracy, oil, vendetta, whatever, etc in Iraq - surely we can spare a few billion for some decent domestic emergency readiness and R&D into alternative energy?

Well right now my energy is still focused on possibly going down south to help with the Katrina victims. I'm trying to work it out with an NPO and that's my first focus. Something was wrong with my internet browser so CNN was still on news from 5 days ago. Yesterday I was looking at Jake's laptop and I'm like "Earthquake? What earthquake? Was this awhile ago??" He's like "uh no."

Anyhow, yes it does suck. Stupid nature doing stupid things.

Dont forget this killer bird flu that seems to have the government pretty worried link

Makes me glad that my parents live way out in the boonies, so in case there ever was a societal breakdown I would be far away from the festering urban areas and thier desperate, seething mobs. Just need to stockpile and collect enough weapons and ammo to defend it.

I'm not too fussed about bird flu either. I'd get taken out right off the bat for sure. I wouldnt live to see the chaos that would ensue....
