Hi all. I joined tonight but have already been cheeky enough to post a couple of times... thought i'd better introduce myself too.
I'm an aussie girl (yeah, i know sisyphus was a guy) who has just got back from 8 months in vietnam and now i have REALLY itchy feet. So before i chain myself to a desk for twenty years (i start in Canberra, aka the most boring city in the world, in Feb next year) i want to have an adventure.
So in late september i'm off to europe. I have very (childishly) romantic notions about Paris so i plan to stay there for a month and take some french classes. Hopefully i'll also be able to scrounge around for some work while i'm there.
OK, i'm probably going to be shot down for this but i've been mulling over this crazy idea... what if i could round up a few willing co-conspiritors, buy a shitty old car and drive around europe for a month? would it be worth it? we could drive to off-the-beaten-track places and even sleep in the car sometimes... ok ok maybe i've been reading too much kerouac...
Any tips or comments would be appreciated...
Anyways, I'm really happy to have found you all. Seems like a really cool bunch of people

Wha? That's not crazy at all. In fact, a lot of people propose ideas like that, but usually for places w/o the type of travel infrastructure that Europe has - i.e. Australia & the US. However, doing that in Europe is not a bad idea at all. Hell, if I had Sept-Feb available, I'd join in! A couple of my friends did that after we finished high school, driving all through France and Germany, and they loved it. If you have the people, the funds, and the desire to to it, I don't see why you couldn't.
I'd just advise that as wonderful as I think Paris is, and as crazy a driver as I am, I would NOT recommend driving in that city. Ever.

Haha, I second that Omi. The Parisians are crazy MTF with their vehicles...especially the moped drivers.....and there are TONS of them. Plus, it's going to be a little tricky for you to get used to driving in Europe in general sisyphus, because everybody drives on the opposite side of the road and I would not want to start my training in a city like Paris.
That said; however, I think that the road trip idea is a great way to do europe and you should definitely go for it!

Welcome
I don't think your idea is crazy at all. Going for things like that are just awesome.
