I know that most Schengen countries will let me stay for three months. But what about moving from country to country for a period of more then three months?
I'm going to buy some tickets soon, and would not want to get into any trouble.

You can stay a TOTAL of 3 months in any/all Schengen countries. After the 3 months are up, you have to spend 3 months OUTSIDE of Schengen countries before you're allowed to go back in again.
Basically, it blows.
You can spend 6 months in the UK, go to any/all Schengen countries for 3 months, then go back to the UK, then back to a Schengen country of your choice... But you are not allowed 3 months in each country-- it's 3 months TOTAL. Which is the lame part.

That is what I though.
I think I've even heard that before and forgot.
I have 5 months to kill. i could fly into the Uk, stay for two months, then spend my three months in France and Belgium. Yes?

Teri - what country's passport do you hold? Not everyone requires a Schengen visa... for instance, countries like the US that don't require visas for EU countries don't have to worry about Schengen complications.

Reviving an old post....
Where can we find out which countries aren't required to comply with this schengen stuff?
I believe NZers aren't required to obtain visas for EU countries (for up to 90 days for most countries), however I thought a lot of the EU countries are now part of the schengen agreement thingie?
I guess what I'm asking is if I have to comply with the schengen thingie meaning I can only spend 90 days out of 180 in schengen countries, then i must leave for at least 90 days in order to re-enter any schengen countries, OR because I am a Kiwi am I lucky enough to be able to ignore this and just have to comply with the specific tourist visas for each country, which seem to be mostly 90 days max in each country??
I've completely confused myself!
Thanks in advance everyone

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement
My plan of going to Poland from Spain looks like it may have a problem hehe.
Here is the problem, since going to a non Schengen countries doesn't reset your day count, backpacking more than 90 days is technically illegal unless you have a day in each of the nonschengen countries for every day you go over the 90 day count. There is no extension to the tourst visa/waver the only other thing you can do is try to get a student visa. Ever want to learn a 2nd language?
For what it's worth it seems like the checking is fairly spotty. I posted this in another thread but I flew to London (got stamped) then to Gibraltar (still UK) and got stamped, but when leaving in to Spain, I got the handwave.
My sister flew to Paris and then to Malaga. The guy in Paris waved her through because of her connecting flight, and the guy in Spain did nothing. She has NO stamp at all in her passport to indicate she ever got into Europe.
I think most people would cut backpackers some slack.

The only people that can not worry about the schengen issue are EU citizens, all others, even if you don't require a visa but just get a stamp on arrival, are still only allowed 90 days.

Thanks guys, i thought this was the case, i guess i was hoping there would be some lovely clause in the agreement that would allow for staying longer than 90 days! Nevermind, I will just have to look for student or working visas and spend a few months in non schengen countries!

Sigh, I may be facing issues myself...I'm currently here on a student visa so I'm not sure what the deal is when that runs out - if I can hop over to east europe and back in and get a tourist visa for the full three months, or if they won't let me in. Or...if I can hop out and hop back in on a theoretical other passport...but that would probably make things unnecessarily complicated...

Depending on your financial situation and the duration of your trip, it may be wise to rent or sublet your home while you're away.If you plan to leave your car at home during the trip, you will obviously need find a suitable parking and storage.
